Matt Clement Retires

By Steve Adams [April 5 at 5:09pm CST]

MLB.com's Jordan Bastian writes via Twitter, that Matt Clement has told the Blue Jays he is retiring.

Clement was good for the Cubs from 2002-2004, and an All-Star with the Red Sox in 2005, but his career was derailed by injuries from 2006 on. He finishes his career with an 87-86 record and a 4.47 ERA. Best of luck in life after baseball, Matt.

He had incredibly wicked stuff. I loved watching him pitch simply because I never knew what to expect.

I'll always remember him for this hilarious game.

yep, i knew exactly what game that would be before clicking.

"WHY IS MATT CLEMENT TRYING TO THROW THE WORST NO-HITTER OF ALL-TIME?"

I'll always remember Matt Clement for that 9/27 game in 2003 - and the celebrations that followed.

Best of luck to him.

For whatever reason, I'll remember him for a game that isn't even in the record books.

It was a Cubs-Cardinals game in May of 2003. The wind was howling out, and the score was 12-9 Cardinals after 4 innings when it got rained out. Clement was the starter that day.

It got rescheduled for September and made that 4 game series into that memorable 5-game series in which we put the Cards away for good.

In 2004 my friend and I made Matt Clement goatees out of duct tape and colored them black for a game in St. Louis. A little kid told me that I, and I quote "look stupid". I learned later that I could just grow my own gross goatee.

He also started the only playoff game I've been too and he kind of sucked (2003, NLDS game 4).

Oh well, I always liked Clement and wish him well.

same here.

And if I recall -- trying to do it from memory -- one of our light hitters hit one of the many HRs that day, and I remember thinking how unfortunate it is for him that it doesn't matter. (I want to say it was Troy O'Leary)
