Steve Stone's shot at Dusty Baker

anyone else catch this in the 9th inning of the Cubs/Sox telecast today?

Cubs were up 13-2 and Fox was pitching.

Steve Stone uttered something to the tone of:

"Fox has played with a bunch of teams prior to this season, including the Cubs a few years back. I remember he closed out a game and then Dusty brought him back the next day with a 7 run lead, he blew out his elbow, and he is just now getting back to where he can pitch again."

I thought it was pretty funny.

He also takes some subtle shots at Hawk too, I think. And it is pretty evident he still has a soft spot for the Cubs.

I'm sure he does. I don't see how you can closely follow a team for that long and be loved by a lot of that team's fans without still liking that team. Even with the one bad incident.

If you think Stone has a "soft spot" for the Cubs, listen to him on the Score sometime. He constantly takes shots at them and rarely gives the organization credit for anything. And the next "good move" Hendry makes will be the first "good move" Hendry makes in Stone's mind. And while there's not much love lost for Hendry on this board, ask yourself if Stone thinks Kenny Williams ever made a bad trade or poor signing.

Stone has an axe to grind, IMHO!

But with regard to his comment about Dustbag, yeah I caught and chuckled.

For the first time in my life, I actually enjoyed listening to the Sox telecast. Maybe it was because Steve Stone had broadcast so many years for the Cubs, but he seemed to so the impossible and make Hawk listenable. Heck, Hawk even was complimenting several Cubs players, instead of taking cheap shots.

In a few years when he is done with the Reds I think you could play a Dusty Mad Lib with that line...

Dusty brought _________ back the next ________________ and ________ blew out his elbow, and he is just now getting back to where he can pitch again

Insert Jonny Cueto, Mark Prior, Edinson Vlozquez, Aaron Harang, Kerry Wood

You need to replace elbow with another blank, so it could be replaced by shoulder when appropriate.

If Stone is taking pokes at Harrelson, I may have to listen to a Sox game every now and then.

The occasional "slider low and away should get him here" notwithstanding, Stone is a good color man if you need him to be the smartest man in the booth. If he was next to a good, focused, intelligent play-by-play man, it might get a little dry. Fortunately he's never been in that position.

I think it's pretty well-known the beef that Stone has with the Cubs.

At some point Stone will probably no longer be working for the Sox, and you'll start hearing sarcastic pokes at Harrelson then. I doubt it will happen before.

I can find a way to blame Dusty for about anything, but Chad Fox's frail elbow isn't one of them.

During Saturday game:

Hawk: Many people don't know that Eddie Murray was a great defensive 1B very early in his career, before he became a DH.

Stone: Yes, and many people are surprised to find out that Murray was a DH when he first came up, because (whoever was the O's 1B at the time) was at first.

Hawk: .........(changes subject)

Either I am missing something, or that was a subtle jab.

Oh, Fox would have gone down eventually, but the way Dusty hastened it was truly spectacular.

Stone is the smartest man in baseball, just ask him. Unfortunately, his words get in the way. Like when he loved the Howry/Eyre signings at the time they were made. When it became fashionable to question those moves, all he had to do was forget his opinion to continue on as the smartest man in baseball.y

By the way Stoney, great move to rid yourself of the evil trib (after 20+ years and previous begging stint to get job back after walking away the first time) to continue on with some of the lowest paying jobs a commentator can get (2nd team espn and White Sox). Great career decisions.
