The first round of roster cuts has happened (link is top on the front page of the site).

MESA, AZ – The Chicago Cubs today announced their first round of roster cuts, reducing the spring roster from 60 to 57 players.

Three non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: right-handed pitchers Andrew Cashner and Rocky Roquet as well as left-handed pitcher Ed Campusano.

Chicago’s spring roster of 57 players consists of 29 pitchers (eight non-roster invitees), six catchers (three non-roster invitees), 10 infielders (four non-roster invitees) and 12 outfielders (three non-roster invitee).

Seriously. With spring training this long I don't really see the point in any minor league assignments right now. I wanted to see Cashner face some more major league hitters. With talk of his outside chance of seeing the bullpen last September, Lou doesn't seem to care.

Because minor league games should be starting now or soon. They'll get more regular usage in minor league camp.

They can still be brought to HoHo at will to face big league hitters if desired.

As you get closer to the regular season, the starters pitch more and more innings, leaving less time for the relievers, who also pitch more frequently. Regardless of any rhetoric, there was zero chance of Cashner making the team, and he wasn't effective early in camp. Demoting him, even at this time, is a non-issue.

I've seen that happen quite a bit, especially for split squad games. Being sent to minor league camp doesn't mean they can only play in minor league games.

I know this isnt the Cubs, but I didnt even realise that Dopirek was still around.

Toronto Blue Jays

Returned LHP Brett Cecil, LHP Mike Maroth, LHP Ken Takahashi, OF/1B Adam Loewen and 1B Brian Dopirak to Minor League camp.

Wasnt he a 2B with us?

Nope. Dopirak is a big guy (6 foot 4, 225 pounds). He was a first baseman in the Cubs system except for a 5 game experiment in left field. He spent last year between high A and AA in the Blue Jays system.

When did Adam Loewen stop pitching?

If I remember correctly he gave it up last year because of stress on his arm that kept causing injuries. Rather than cut him the Orioles thought they would go the Ankiel route. Since he was out of options and the O's obviously couldn't keep him on the roster they released him with the intentions of picking him back up and putting him in the minors. Instead Loewen signed with the Jays and many people on OH were pissed.

He was also a highly-touted prospect who was supposed to be the future at 1B after Choi flopped.

Two more today:

They probably just wanted Caridad to get a little more work and get ready to start once again in the minors. He did a good job though and showed that he might be able to contribute to the squad at the end of this year or next.

Yeah, Caridad was solid in the AFL and again this spring. I'm glad to see, since he's a bit older for a prospect.

Optioned pitcher Jose Ascanio and outfielders Jake Fox and Sam Fuld to Iowa; assigned pitcher Jason Waddell and infielder Bobby Scales to minor league camp.

It also seems as though the Cubs have managed to get Richie Robnett through waivers and outrighted him to AAA Iowa.
