Re: Roster Cuts

Cubs Release Paul Bako, Mike Stanton

By Tim Dierkes [March 30 at 12:04pm CST]

According to a press release, the Cubs released catcher Paul Bako and reliever Mike Stanton today. So, it looks like Koyie Hill has the team's backup catcher job.

Bako, 36, hit .364/.400/.515 in 35 spring plate appearances. Stanton, 41, allowed six runs and 13 hits in 8.3 innings.

Wow.

I'm not surprised by this. The right moves were made. They probably shouldn't have signed Bako from the beginning to be honest.

Eh, didn't hurt that much. Maybe it sparked Koyie to have a good spring training, or something.

And I do like the move. Might as well go with the younger Hill.

Not only the fact that he's younger, it helps that he's a switch hitter too.

Yeah, that definitely doesn't hurt.

3 Notable ex-Cubs sent to the minors today.

Matt Murton(Rockies) who was having a nice spring .302/.362/.453

Josh Kroeger(White Sox) who was having a mediocre Spring .283/.328/.415

Jacque Jones(Reds) who was having a God awful spring .091/.149/.114

Oddly enough, Corey Patterson .125/.125/.175 hasnt officially been cut from Washingtons oer crowded with players well better than him outfield, but Im sure its coming.

Actually, he was. I saw it in the transactions listing of my local paper yesterday or today.

Good for Koye Hill.

Please don't let Soto take a foul tip to the nads, or get a cold, or anything that keeps him out of the lineup for an extended period of time.

I think this sort of thing is the reason why Hendry usually gets his man. He told Hill that they'd give him a shot.

This has to almost be it for him. Hard to imagine him ever getting a call up to Washington, and no one else has shown interest.

Too bad, but while he was certainly rushed, he never displayed any willingness to abandon/alter that terrible swing.

It might be in his best interest to go to Japan or even some independant league for a few years and try to pad his stats.

Not sure if this is meant for Cubs only, but...

Marlins released third baseman Dallas McPherson.

Our expectations for the Marlins get lower by the hour. Because of the foolish decision to re-sign Wes Helms to a guaranteed contract, the team is now in a position to have an entirely right-handed bench. It's not even a good right-handed bench. Ronny Paulino and Helms are only acceptable against left-handers, and Robert Andino and Brett Carroll have yet to show they can be useful major leaguers at all. Those four combined to hit .223 with nine homers and a 118/33 K/BB ratio in 449 major league at-bats last season. McPherson is hardly a sure thing, but he sure seemed like a great fit for a team going with a light-hitting righty at third. Hopefully, he's able to quickly find a fit elsewhere.

Part of me wants the Cubs to get him. It'd be nice having a guy who hit 42 homers in the minors last year sitting in our system as an emergency option. Or is he out of options now?
