I'm still baffled how these guys, who either sucked as a player or were fired as a coach or GM can get a gig on TV or on the radio and now they are freaking geniuses. Phillips was/is a bum, he got the boot in NY, but he's gonna speculate on something like this. C'mon! And there are plenty of them out there. Another one I can't stand, different sport, is Doug Gottlieb. To hear him talk you would think he had the skills of Jordan on the court. Phillips...Gottlieb....Just, shut, up!

That's the big problem. These guys who failed are immediately taken as experts on TV. Why? They are the ones who didn't know how to be successful. I trust the nerd who studied the sport since he was kid over a GM/coach who got fired.

Players are a bit different. Some may never have amounted to anything but they could have been as intelligent as anyone but just lacked the elite athletic ability to stick. Plus they can provide insight into what's like in a clubhouse and that type of stuff that no one else can.

I can understand taking on a failed or retired player as an analyst, because sometimes even if the physical gifts have abandoned a player they still get the mental part of the game.

Failed GMs, though? They've basically failed at being an analyst for a team.

Well seeing as Lou gave him 501 at bats last year it's pretty hard to say Lou was not patient with him.

That's not to say he shouldn't have been more patient.

Essentially benching him at the end of the season, when we already had everything locked up... there was no point to that.

That's my favorite. He ran Detroit into the ground, yet can get a job analyzing football? Hilarious.

It pisses me off that Lou pays attention to Phillips.

that's what i was going to say. phillips is a tool, but the "i've lost all respect for him" stuff was kind of dumb.

Millen was a decent analyst before he became a GM though

Millen was better than decent, he was one of the better ones around.

He's still a very good analyst. The fact that he was a horrible GM really speaks more to the difficulty of that job and how player's knowledge of the game doesn't translate to GM knowledge. Being an analyst takes 1% of the research of a GM so it really shouldn't surprise anyone that someone could be a good analyst and a terrible GM.

Steve Phillips has a job because he says dumb things to get a reaction. It would be pretty boring if all they had was smart people agreeing with each other.

SP is a tool, but Lou is making Steve's argument for him. He's an analyst. He sucks, but he's paid to give his opinion on various happenings in baseball. He thinks Lou handled the situation poorly. Whether he's right or wrong, his job is to state that opinion on ESPN. Lou's pissed that Steve didn't come say it to Lou's face? Cripes. That's just stupid, Lou.

Oh, and I agree with Steve to a point. Lou was pretty public with his frustration over Fukudome's struggles at times last season. Patience is more than just leaving him in the lineup. And I'm not sure his public venting about the situation was the best way to handle it.

All you have to do is happen to have ESPN on when they decide to put a piece with Phillips on the air. I don't necessarily think it involves Lou spending extra effort just to pay attention to Phillips.

Maybe more than that in the research department, but your point stands.

The real difference is an analyst doesn't need business acumen, negotiating skills, personnel, quick trigger decision making skills.

Like us the analyst can stick to the "theory"of the gm job

I alway thought Millen was one the smartest guys out there before he took the Detroit job. I am still amazed that he was a total failure. On the other end Bill Walsh was arguably the greatest football mind ever and was a failure at being an analyst.

I heard Phillips try to quantify his arguments on Mike and Mike... what a hoser.

Yeah I heard it. He pretty much said well what I was really meaning was Fukudome is different than other players because he couldn't relate very well and you have to show more patience. I was meaning Lou didn't.

He pretty much backed off what he said.

I don't think it looks good when managers acknowledge these guys.

I don't think it's really realistic to think managers will ignore commentators.
