XM Radio: Roberts Signs 4-Year Extension with Orioles

Recommended Posts

Good. Maybe this will end any roberts speculation forever.

I was hoping he'd be a fallback option in the offseason (as a FA) in case the second base situation sucks. Now, we've got a whole heck of a lot riding on Fontenot playing well.

Of course, I wouldn't have been thrilled with paying Roberts $10 million a year over 4 years, either.

Maybe that's a bad value in this market, but I don't think that's overpaid. He is a very very good player. In DeRosa's career year last year, Roberts outplayed him in several areas.

The problem is his age and the fact that speed is such an important part of his game. It makes him a very questionable bet to give that long of a deal to. He'll start slowing down both on the basepaths and defensively, and he'll have to hit as well as he did last year in those final 2 years to make up for that.

The Orioles caved on this one. Roberts has been demanding a 4th year for months. Because of Hudson, the trade value for Roberts has been zero, so I guess they weren't willing to gamble on losing him for draft picks at the end of the year.

Agree. Roberts would have been nice going into 2008, but he's 31 now, and I have little interest in trying to coax multiple quality years out of a 30-something middle infielder.

The last two years, DeRosa and Roberts would be a tossup depending on what you're looking for (speed-leadoff or power-RBI). Obviously over his total career, Roberts has been far superior, but DeRosa has been very good since he became a regular. Another obvious difference was a few million in salary.

I wouldn't even hate 3/30, but that fourth year bothers me. The way I figure it, you're looking at two good to very good years and then the third will be a dropoff (perhaps significant for the reasons CCP mentioned). The fourth could be awful, though if he were a free agent I'd probably look at a 3/30 with a team option for a fourth.

The Orioles are in a situation where they have to overpay for guys like Roberts if they want to keep him. He's a fan favorite which shouldn't enter into the equation too much for competitive teams. But the O's have really no chance the next 2 years unless they get really really lucky with some of their young pitchers. Roberts- deservedly or not- is the face of the franchise. I'd bet he is their #1 selling Jersey- he is around here and it's not even close.

So overpaying Roberts for the 4th year probably helps the fanbase not feel as bad about going to Camden Yards.
