Yep, and it will continue (obviously). Rice is young, very young. Texas is young, very young. aTm has lots of good young players. Baylor will need to reload though. TCU is pretty stout every year. Houston's also a solid club. Noble's incredible.

Damn, Danny Hultzen had another superlative outing and has emerged as Virginia's friday starter. He's been by the far the best freshman SP thus far. Start by start:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2011 Prospects IP H R ER BB SO AB BF NP Opponent
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2/21 Hultzen, Danny...... 6.0 6 0 0 0 5 23 24 W (1-0) vs Bucknell

3/13 Hultzen, Danny...... 7.0 4 1 1 2 13 23 26 115 W (4-0) vs Florida State

Hultzen is a projectable lefty who runs his fastball in the low 90s. He would have been a shoe-in for the first or second round had he been signable. He's a legit two way guy.

Kyle Gibson is an absolute machine. He followed up last week's performance against Texas(seen in the previous post) with this line against #3 aTm: 9 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 16/1 K/BB. That's a 29/5 K/BB ratio in 18 IP the last two weeks against two top 5 teams.

I saw a lot of great pitching this past weekend at UK-Vandy series. James Paxton and Mike Minor on Friday, Chris Rusin and Caleb Cotham on Saturday, and Alex Meyer and Sonny Gray on Sunday.

Did Moore get into the games this weekend?

Right now I'm thinking that two likely guys the Cubs would target would be Brad Roxberger at USC and James Paxton at Kentucky if they decide to add more pitching to our system (what don't we need to add?). Paxton might be pitching his way out of our range, unfortunately. Roxberger still has some command issues, but figures to go in the 20-35 range.

Some other things across the world. Robert Stock looks to be moving into the Sunday rotation spot for USC. He blew away #3 Arizona State for five innings. His bat hasn't come around but he's a very good catch and throw catcher with plus power potential. The thing we have to remember about him is that he graduated a year early from HS and was already a year younger than his class in high school. He enrolled in USC at age 16. He'll be 19 until pretty much 2010 so his bat could be a late bloomer. He's really about as old as most freshmen (and two years younger than true freshman Chris Dwyer). Either way, his potential on the mound behind the plate is first round worthy, but his performance and lack of pitching consistently leave him in the 2-5 range. If he continues to have success as a starter like he did yesterday, he could easily vault into the first round.

Sammy Solis (pot'l 1st rounder in 2010) is done for the season. Matt Harvey has struggled mightily, and Matt Harvey probably isn't the top guy in the draft anymore. Barrett Loux and him are neck and neck and Anthony Ranuado probably moved ahead of them both.

Scott Bittle continues to be quit the badass for No. 7 Ole Miss. I suspect he'll easily be a first rounder this year.

2008: 7-1, 1.78 ERA, 70 IP, 130 K, 30 BB, 35 hits, 8 saves

2009 (so far): 5-2, 2.17 ERA, 45 IP, 68 K, 22 BB, 28 hits, 3 saves

Bittle's line yesterday against Georgia: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K

Bittle is the best senior of the '09 class, he has a good chance to go in the 1st, but unlike last year his medical will have to have less question marks.

Bittle figures to go in the second round somewhere, maybe someone looking for a cheap sign with a boatload of early picks will pop him in the supplemental round like Arizona (6 of first 60 picks) or the Angels (5 of first 48 picks). Freshman C Taylor Hightower and Sophomore LHP Drew Pomeranz both figure to go into the first 50 picks in 2011 and 2010, respectively. Both guys could find themselves in the top half of the first round and are probably better long term pro prospects.

Bittle's a RHP with a fringy average FB and a plus "cutter" which is in the low-to-mid 80s. I see him as a potential setup man at best. He's got a good change but I'm wary of college RHPs with marginal FBs. That being said, he's a guy that should move quickly and could help his team by July 2010.

Congrats to former Cubs farmhand Tracy Smith as he led his Indiana Hoosiers to the Big Ten championship. The Hoosiers outscored their opponents 47-9 over the four day tournament. They'll be led into the Regional by rhp Eric Arnett who stands to be a late 1st/early 2nd round pick in a couple weeks. Catcher Josh Phegley put up a .349/.464/.656, 17 hr, 65 rbi line for the year and is the best draft eligible player on the team in my opinion. Conference freshman of the year Alex Dickerson went .374/.429/.634, 14 hr, 57 rbi for the year.

Do you think Phegley's going to stick at catcher in the pros? He has a great bat, but I've heard he might have to change positions at some point.

This is my third year saying this, but I'll just reiterate that this thread has piss poor participation (only 15 separate members have posted in it) because it is hidden away in a forum that people rarely look at. It deserves to get max exposure and be in a high traffic subforum like Social next year which is where the other College Sports threads are.

Seriously. Very few members venture into the June Draft subforum until it is...well...time for the DRAFT. There's a lot of great information and cool stats posted in this thread and it mostly goes unseen.

This 2009 version only has 4 pages. The 2008 version had 6 pages, 2007 had 5, and 2006 also had 5.

I guarandamntee you that you'd have more than 4-6 pages if this were in Social next year.

If you had asked me this question last year I'd have said no, but now i truly believe he can. Tracy has stuck with him there since day one, and this year nobody would even test him. i think his freshman year he realized catcher is where he was going to stick and made the effort to become great at that position. I think scouts have kind've backed off with the same concerns you have, but I have no doubts he can catch at the next level.
