From MLBTR:

Levine also notes that the Cubs have an eye on Mariners pitcher Aaron Heilman, a player they've shown interest in before. Levine speculates that Ronny Cedeno could be a fit for Seattle.

I forgot Heilman was now with the Mariners. I'd do it in a heartbeat; a spare part for a possible bullpen upgrade.

It wouldnt be a bullpen upgrade, it would be a rotation downgrade. He'd get the number 5 spot, put up sub-Marquisesqe numbers while Sean Marshall is the loogy.

What makes you think Heilman would go into the rotation. I don't believe MLBTR's lies, but I would do that deal yesterday.

Because all reports have the Cubs looking for a starter, not a reliever, plus the fact that Heilmans been expressing his desire for a full time starter role for the last 2 years. The logical move would be to sign Beimal, who would come cheap at this point for the loogy, and give Marshall the 5th rotation spot.

No, the logical move would be to trade for Jake Peavy and sign Beimel to be the LOOGY and shoot Neil Cotts.

The Peavy thing would be the iseal move, but it's becoming more of a pipe dream than anyhing, and as I have previously stated, I wont believe any Peavy news until I see him in a Cubs uni at the press conference.

Also on the Cubs' front, the team has expressed interest in right-handed pitcher Aaron Heilman of the Seattle Mariners. The former Met is considered by the Cubs a possible missing link to their bullpen for next year.

Levine specifically states bullpen, not number 5.

Hooray! I like him as another long man, even

If you recall, part of the Hendry's infatuation with Aaron Heilman (a Notre Dame grad) stems backs to his relationship with former-Irish skipper Paul Manieri...who was also very influential in the Cubs selecting the "Shark". Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs trade for Heilman to fill the role of the long-reliever and occasional spot start. You need depth and flexibility like this on the team given certain starters (i.e. Harden) are injury prone, and that inevitably some other starters will miss some starts throughout the season. I believe a "change of scenery" to Chicago might be just want Aaron Heilman needs to reach his potential.

I'd rather see Heilman close. Don't know what happened this past year, but he's usually a guy that doesn't walk people and keeps the ball in the park.

If thats on the table it needs gettin' done.

No kidding... I'd make that swap in a heartbeat.

The rumor doesn't specifically say that it would be a 1 for 1 deal, so there might be other players involved. I would think the Cubs would need a backup middle IF though with only Fontenot, Miles, and Theriot on the team.

I'd like this.

Was he hurt or something last year? I was just wondering why his numbers spiked up so dramatically from the previous 3 years.

Isn't his fastball pretty flat? I imagine as it starts to lose velocity, he'll get pretty hittable.

Lot of similarities to Bob Howry, down to the really bad 2008 season. Straight, but good, fastball which was down a little last year. Both had been pretty good at locating the fastball. Loss of location, plus loss of velocity equaled both getting hit pretty hard last year. Both also had a lot of appearances the previous 2 years. Only Jon Rauch and Scott Proctor had more.

why on earth would Seattle do that deal?

Because that organization is under management that is slightly better than the one in Baltimore.

Once again, people make comments with NO CLUE what they're talking about. They recently canned their entire management team (literally), and hired two blog writers off the net to help re-shape their mindset. They hired one guy from USS Mariner, and one guy from Lookout Landing. They're going SABR. Isn't that what most of the crowd with pitchforks want from their teams?

I mean they changed their entire organizations mindset. What else do you want.

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that he's got marginal stuff that has kept him in the bullpen, and relievers tend to be inconsistent, with limited shelf life on their effectiveness.
