  1. Does anyone recall "Wild Things" first appearance with the Cubs? I believe it was Opening Day '89 vs Philly at Wrigley...Cubs were clinging to a lead (1-run ?)...enter Mitch the Bitch who proceeded to walk the the bases full, then strike out the next three batters (or something very close to that)...in any case, it was definitely a sign of things to come!! Love him or hate him, he always made things excited. Another of my favorite Wild Thing moments came in an Aug, 89 ? home (night) game vs. the Muts when Mitch blistered a multi-run 3B or HR off of David Cone in the 8th inning of a huge game. Anyone else happen to be at that game?!
  2. How long has it been since Dave Martinez and /or Raphie Palmiero were doing Cindy Sandberg. I remember we traded Martinez to the Expos for Mitch Webster (I have one of his bats by the way -- long story)...I recall this trade was done in-season. Who did we get for Palmiero...did that involve Mitch Williams...I wanna say that trade was made in the off season?
  3. The Cubbies are coming, the Cubbies are coming...a tra la la la la!!!!
  4. Thats weird. I work in ophthalmology, and I cant think of any condition in which you suddenyl go completely blind. My mom always told me I would go blind if I did it too much...wow, I never thought she was telling the truth!
  5. LOL, the CF message board read "SAVE FERRIS" when I typed in section 420!! Swing batter, batter...swiiiiiiinnnng batter!! :-)
  6. I have had the good fortune of attending two of the Cubs' all-time great games...#1 "the Sandberg game" and #2 the first game of the '84 Divisional playoffs in which the Cubs routed the Pads 13-0....as well as Nolan Ryan's last (7th) no-hitter. Guess if I could go back in time to watch a game, it would be a contest from the summer of '69 -- the first I remember following the Cubs -- any game that Ernie, Billy, Fergie and the rest of the boys had a great game (obviously before mid-August)!
  7. Just when you thought Lou's gut couldn't possibly get any bigger...
  8. Outside of getting home field advantage for the first round, does it really matter all that much how the Cubs make the playoffs? At this point winning the division is a pipe dream -- especially projecting a team that is only 4 games above .500 116 games into the season to play .750 ball the rest of the way. I don't care how easy the schedule may look...this team is just too darn inconsistent and the Cards have been rolling ever since they acquired Holliday, Lugo and DeRosa. The Cubs are currently 4 games back in the wild card hunt and must climb over FOUR teams to win it...I am not even sure winning the WC is very likely to happen. The silver lining is the team is getting healthier for the stretch run...hopefully Marmol and/or Guzman can solidify the closer role, Soriano can earn his pay the rest of the way, and Z can show some discipline in his performing his prescribed exercises...that would a good start.
  9. Taking my GF to her first ever Cubs game on Saturday, August 15 vs. the Pirates. Would love to get some great seats at at decent price. Please PM me if you can help. FYI, I have access to ND Football tickets, many times at face value or just above. Would be willing to return the favor to someone looking for visit South Bend this fall. Thanks! Go Cubs! Go Irish! 10. Oh hogwash...this was never an issue "back when I was growing up" when four man rotations were the norm; heck, i recall wilbur wood pitched both games of a double-header one time. The evolution of the middle relievers and closers has lead to the "pussification" of starters. Has anyone given any consideration to the possibility of pitchers not being trained properly when it comes to conditioning and strength training? Or the torque subjected to pitcher's arms when throwing certain pitches that weren't so common way back when. I am by no means trying to make a case for Busty Faker (who I think is one of the dumbest managers/head coaches ever, along with Don Baylor and Tyrone Willingham), but I don't see the pitch counts referenced above as being way out of whack to the point that it should be a reason to point the finger at the manager.
  11. Caught the tail end of Bruce Levine's appearance on WMVP's noon show...he mentioned that Cubs have an interest in two Paul's for the back-up catcher position...Bako and Lo Duca. This is the first time I have heard mention of the later. Definitely a down-grade from Hank White and Bako defensively, but he has always been a decent hitter, no? Thoughts?
  12. If you recall, part of the Hendry's infatuation with Aaron Heilman (a Notre Dame grad) stems backs to his relationship with former-Irish skipper Paul Manieri...who was also very influential in the Cubs selecting the "Shark". Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs trade for Heilman to fill the role of the long-reliever and occasional spot start. You need depth and flexibility like this on the team given certain starters (i.e. Harden) are injury prone, and that inevitably some other starters will miss some starts throughout the season. I believe a "change of scenery" to Chicago might be just want Aaron Heilman needs to reach his potential.
  13. From http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ The Rockies are apparently debating whether to sign Tim Redding or trade for Jason Marquis. Reports in the Denver Post suggest Redding is the top target. Mets Starting Pitching Update By Tim Dierkes [December 19 at 2:28pm CST] SI.com's Jon Heyman has the latest on the Mets' quest to add two starting pitchers. Heyman says the Mets are waiting for Scott Boras to get Mark Teixeira signed before seriously engaging for Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez, their top two targets (in that order). Randy Wolf is the third choice if the Boras clients fall through. Heyman suggests Lowe's asking price is $66MM over four years. The Mets are also looking to add a back-end type to soak up innings. This group includes Freddy Garcia, Tim Redding, and Jason Marquis.
  14. The Cubs pulled out. Is there a penalty for early withdrawl? :D Hendry knows the pressure is on Towers to move Peavy so the Cubs have "hand". Peavy also has "hand" since he has a NTC and can basically name where he wants to play. My feeling is the Cubs and Peavy have a "hand-shake" agreement and it is only a matter of time before Towers lowers his demands to the Cubs. It's certainly worth listening to offers for DeRosa, but the guy is a true pro and way too valuable to the Cubs (all things considered) for them to trade him unless it's a deal that knocks Jim's socks off...and my guess is that Jim has been wearing sandals all week!
  15. Rule 5 Draft By Tim Dierkes [December 11 at 10:54am CST] The latest on the Rule 5 draft, to be updated... Here is the draft order. Baseball America's John Manuel suggests 10-12 players will be picked. You can refresh this MLB.com page to get the results as they come in. The Nationals took Reds righty Terrell Young with the first pick but may be trading or selling him off. The Mariners took Yankees middle infielder Reegie Corona from the Yankees. The Padres took Everth Cabrera of the Rockies. The Pirates took Donald Veal from the Cubs. The Orioles took Lou Palmisano from the Brewers and made trade him to the Astros. The Giants took Luis Perdomo. Reds take David Patton, Tigers take Kyle Bloom, Royals take Jose Lugo, A's take Ben Copeland. D'Backs take James Skelton, Marlins take Zack Kroenke, Astros take Gilbert de la Vera. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
