Melton is a decent pick. Probably coulda waited til 119 easily though. But he was a sleeper according to some people.

Is it possible they view Melton as a LB?

BIOGRAPHY: Former running back who moved into the starting lineup as a senior and then posted 29 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss.

POSITIVES: Relatively athletic defensive end with adequate size/speed numbers. Moves well on his feet, plays with balance, and fluid making plays in all directions of the field. Keeps his pads low to the ground, stays within his pass rush angles, and quickly gets into the backfield to disrupt the action. Works his hands throughout the play, and rarely off his feet.

NEGATIVES: Lacks top first-step quickness. Does not show a burst of speed. Raw at the position, and does too much thinking rather than playmaking.

ANALYSIS: After bouncing around as a reserve early in his Texas career, Melton may have finally found a home at defensive end. He possesses the build for a two-gap lineman, yet he is a developmental prospect who needs a lot of work on his overall game.

PROJECTION: Seventh Round

After reading this, I stand corrected. I thought he was a late 4th to mid 5th pick. I knew the Bears would pick him eventually, as they loved him at the Texas pro day. But yeah, they coulda waited til the 5th most likely.

It sounds like the guy MIGHT justify using that pick on him, but still...they could have taken someone else and got him later. He'd easily still be there on our next pick for sure.

Some teams were looking at him as a potential LB, which he played in HS.

Bears remaining picks:

4th - 119

5th - 140, 154

6th - 190

7th - 246, 251

Oh, and we have to watch the Cubs lose again today when we have the time

I'm not one to whine about coverage but it seems the Bears have been talked about for about 3 minutes total, if that. And without Jay Cutler, that's cut in half.

If the Bulls win, it'll soften the blow for the day.

I love his athletic ability. Anybody who can move from RB to starting DE for one of the best teams in the country is definitely worth keeping an eye on. However, it was a reach. The Bears clearly like rare athletic ability, so DJ Moore should have been strongly considered with his 3-story building vertical jump.

Rotoworld's take:

Henry Melton-DL- Bears Apr. 26 - 12:36 pm et

Bears selected Texas DE Henry Melton with the No. 105 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Melton, who began his college career as an oversized tailback behind Selvin Young and Jamaal Charles, later moved to defense and started opposite Brian Orakpo. Melton only had four sacks as a senior, but Rod Marinelli will try to develop him into a three-down player. He's already got the athlete part down.

Something doesn't jive. Either his speed and athletism makes him a nice convert to LB or he's a real reach at DE when we've already drafted a DE and have several veteran DE's already in place.

Maybe Moore will make it to us.

Gilbert can jump out of a pool and this...

Maybe they could use Gathright, since the Cubs don't need him.

Well from the Rotoworld take it sounds like Marinelli had a boner for him. At the very least they could have waited till 119 and taken Moore. Perhaps there were some teams at the Texas pro day that made the Bears nervous.

Round 4, Pick 5 (105) (From Seahawks) Henry Melton DE 6'3" 260 Texas

Pick Analysis:He's an athlete with speed. He had an unbelievable pro day, running a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash. He came into Texas as a highly regarded running back before eventually transitioning to defensive end two years ago. He's got a great first move in the pass rush and really good explosion.

sounds like that might have been the case tfarks.

Sounds like no one is sure about him besides he's a freak of an athlete. He went from a slow first step to someone who explodes off the line. He sounds like a good project with a high upside, but the lack of DB's is a little worrisome. The Bears brain trust definitely went in to the draft with pass rush as the top priority.

I'd be surprised if Moore gets past San Diego.

They are preparing for next offseason. I also read a couple different places that he is a great special teams guy so another toy for dave toub.

Does sound like he might be able to play some SLB. And I love the potential for the Bears to get a strong pass rusher from the LB position. Phillip Hunt from Houston may have been a better choice for that though.
