Those are value points, but I prefer NOT to go into the season with one proven TE on the roster. I like Davis' potential, but he is still prolly a yr away---if ever---to be a big contributor, and Louis I think ultimately he will be an OL. I personally think Louis is going to outgrow TE. I mean the league has seen a lot of TE become talented offensive lineman, ie Peters, Jason.

Looks like he already did. Listed on chicagobears.com as a guard.

He was discussed in today's draft recap story as a likely TE.

Big and fast: Louis is also a versatile and athletic young player. He played tight end his first two seasons at San Diego State before being moved to right guard in 2007 and right tackle in 2008. The 6-2, 303-pounder will line up as a tight end with the Bears.

In San Diego for the NFL owners meetings, Angelo attended a workout the Bears had set up with Louis.

“He ran a 4.75 at around 300 pounds,” Angelo said. “I’ve never seen a guy that big since (former NFL offensive lineman) Randall McDaniel run that fast, and when he ran that fast, he was about 275 pounds.

“[Louis] has some special traits. We even threw passes out of the fullback position just to give him a look there. He’s a pretty good athlete, so we said with that versatility in the seventh round, why not?”

According to the site, he got #60 though. Obviously, that could change a lot though.

More on the jersey numbers

As he prepares for his second NFL season, Earl Bennett has traded in the No. 85 he wore as a rookie for No. 80. He wanted No. 10, the number he wore at Vanderbilt, but the NFL prohibits receivers who have a number in the 80s from switching to a number from 10 through 19.

http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=5792

The NFL is stupid. Eligible Numbers 1-49, 80-89. Non Eligible Numbers 50-70, 90-99.

Done, simple.

Can someone explain to me why that is even a rule?

The position coaches are going to be earning their money if these projects work out.

It's evident the Bear's front office has that confidence. Luckily we have a QB that doesn't need much coaching. With the new found talent on the offensive side of the ball, I'm much more interested in seeing the defense. Lovie is supposedly taking the reigns and Marinelli has a fantastic reputation as a DL coach. If they bring the defense back into the top 10 I see extensions going all around.

As a Bears fan, would it be worth it to put up with Favre-Mania for a couple more months and have him go to Minnesota and ruin their season?

Favre throws interceptions, Vikings fall behind, Favre has to throw even more, Adrian Peterson's legs get another sub-350 carry season.

i heard the interview with angelo on mully and hanley and he seems pretty excited about johnny knox, indicating that there was no way in hell that they would have taken him if they didn't have cutler in the fold.

however, it appears to be steltz and bullocks at fs.

At this point, I really don't understand not bringing Brown back. They can get him cheap, and at the very least he can buy you some time early in the season to get those guys coached up. Is it possible there was some sort of falling out with the coaching staff?

I haven't heard anything about that.

I wonder if they just felt like they needed to cut the rope, no more Mike Brown to look forward to coming back, someone has to step up rather than waiting for MB to save them.

But it's not like he was Mark Prior. He did play most of last year. And as a S, he's hardly the most important man on the field. He just fills a hole where the Bears have very little talent currently on the roster.

knowing mike brown's penchant for saying what's on his mind, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

The only thing I could think of is they feel he's taken his coach on the field role a little too literally, and he's disregarding the actual coachs' words. Maybe they are letting him dangle to teach him a lesson about his value, but either way, he'd still be the best safety on the Bears.

what his status? has he been talking to anyone?

The only thing I know is he's a free agent, no idea if he's talked to anybody, but he certainly hasn't drawn a lot of visible interest. He's clearly not the same caliber of safety he was at his best, and his value to most teams is probably significantly less than his value to the Bears.

yeah, he knows the defense inside and out, he's smart and he can still lay people out. i hope they come to their senses and figure out that neither steltz nor bullocks is the answer. if we go into the season with either of those two, we're doomed. steltz reminds me of AA and bullocks reminds me of d. manning, i don't think either of them do anything particularly well, and both of them do a few things very very poorly.

You could be on to something, goons. If the Bears get to TC or even after the OTA's are all done, and they realize they've got a gaping hole where they can't afford it, maybe they do extend the olive branch to MB and see what happens.

There was some question about the Mike Mitchell situation and where the Bears were going to draft him. Brad Biggs seems to know where Angelo was targeting him.

As far as the great Mitchell debate, I don't think it's a matter of one side lying and the other side telling the truth, let me tell you that to start with. The Bears liked Mitchell an awful lot. They were one of a few teams that really had him on their radar. Secondary coach Jon Hoke went to visit with him on campus and that went really well. The Bears then brought Mitchell in for a visit and physical. He met with coach Lovie Smith for about 45 minutes. It was a good visit. The phone call you're referring to was a call that Bears Midwest scout Jeff Shiver placed to Mitchell. As it was explained to me, Shiver told him to stay by the phone. He didn't say stay by the phone because we're going to draft you today. The Bears thought they were going to get Mitchell, but not on Sunday.

The club was prepared to select him with one of its two picks in the fourth round.

The 4th round makes sense. That is where Jerry likes to target off the radar guys. Before that he may have a tendency to overdraft, but in the middle of the draft it's not at all unusual to think of him taking a guy that many people had going undrafted. The Melton guy is an example. When he was selected NFL.com didn't even have his basic measurements available, which tells me he was on very few people's radars for even getting drafted. That could have been Mitchell.

That's the way it appears. He'd have been a really interesting pick in the 4th round. He was a huge reach in the 2nd, however.

This is also a pretty good example of Haugh, and the kind of unsubstantiated reporting he does. I'm not a big fan.
