Now that Ibanez has signed in Philly, he's slated to be the everyday LF, forcing out Pat Burrell, who is also a FA. Would there be any interest in bringing Pat the Bat to Wrigley? His numbers remind me of a poor man's Adam Dunn (high power, low BA, high OBP). I don't know much about his D, though, but could he be any worse than Dunn?

edit: I'm only advocating looking at him if for some reason we miss out on Bradley. Milton is still my first choice.

Far, far worse.

I asked the same question in the Ibenez to Philly thread. Burrell slugged 33hrs in 08 and is only 32, but it looks like he made over $14mil in 08 so he could be looking for quite a bit of coin. But I would think his D can't be any worse than Dunn nor Bradley.

It really is. IIRC, Dunn has a pretty strong arm to make up for no range and Pat the bat has absolutely nothing going for him out there. There is a reason they call him Pat the bat and it's not because he drives in runs with his glove

Burrell has one of the best OF arms in the game. But, he still has terrible range and defense and would probably be horrible in RF.

It's hard to tell how bad Burrell would be in RF because since his rookie year he's never played as much as an inning anywhere other than LF(and he's not good at it). I don't think he'd be a good enough bet to be better than DeRosa(or maybe even Pie depending on who's evaluating his defense) to bother with.

Let's trade Soriano, and try to sign Manny, Dunn, Burrell for the outfield. The sheer comedy of their defense would more than make up for the runs allowed.

For real? I did not know this. So does that make him more serviceable than Dunn out there?

I don't know why but Burrell seems like the type of the guy the Giants are going to sign, and probably to a larger deal than everyone thinks he is going to get.

No I enjoy chanting, "Burrell, Burrell, Burrell ... YOU SUCK!" I don't want to miss out on that because we signed him.

That is one of the worst chants around.

He's projected to make less than $10M per year so if we miss out on Bradley and Dunn is too expensive, I wouldn't hate it. I don't think he's even on the Cubs radar, however.

Agreed. If we don't seal the deal with Bradley, then it sounds like Dunn might come a little cheaper, as it's been reported we are his first pick. Burrell is more than a decent plan C. If we did end up with him, then Soriano is manning right instead (same with Dunn...).

If we aren't getting Bradley or Hermida I'd rather let Pie play center and keep Fukudome in right. Then the Cubs could see who else is available come the trade deadline. The Brewers have gotten substantially worse and so have the Astros so I don't think waiting until the deadline is going to be to awful. As long as we have a bat for the playoffs.

If we were going to get a right hander instead of left hander, I'd want Manny, not Burrell.

Are you factoring in the amount each will be getting paid? I assume so because it's not even a discussion if you aren't. That said, I doubt there's room in the budget for Manny.

No, I simply said I'd pick Manny over Burrell if we had the money. It doesn't matter though, we're getting someone who can bat left handed.
