I think this deserves its own thread.

Anyway, the Peavey thread is getting mucked up with Marquis as it seems that the two are linked in the sense that Marquis must go if Peavey comes.

Here is my deal with this, Marquis problem is his contract. I wouldn't mind keeping him with Wood gone. Now Marshall, Samardijza, Hart, or Goudin will have to get some starts instead of primarily pitch from pen.

If Guzman or Cashner (if he's not starting in the minors) can come up big then Marquis leaving isn't a big deal. If not, the Cubs are going to have bullpen issues next year. Don't get me started on Gregg.

Nevertheless, who wants/needs him and who can afford him (if the Cubs are paying part of his salary they should be able to get a decent prospect)?

I have a pretty good feeling you are stuck with Marquis until you decide to eat more than 4 million of his contract! If the Cubs eat more of teh contract it sort of defeats the purpose of getting rid of him.

Looks like the Mets turned down a Marquis and $$ for Heilman deal. I'm guessing this deal was offered before the Cubs traded for Gregg? Otherwise it wouldn't make much sense salary wise.

Getting Heilman would make it easier to trade Marshall.

Hopefully if Garland accepts arbi this will be revisited. Also, the glut of closers might lower the price enough for the mets to fix their pen exclusively through FA and leave them with Heilman to be traded for a starter (because for some [expletive] reason they refuse to give him a shot there).

Id be very much in favor of getting Heilman, who would have a lot of value with 2 cheap years of a set-up man/swing man/average starter to fill in for an injury. Not to mention getting rid of Marquis.

How come? Marquis has gone 23-18 with a 4.43 era in 61 starts the last two years. Some team needing a starter is gonna be interested in him at 6m or so. If the Cubs want something of value in return, then they might need to eat more then 4m. But otherwise I'm pretty confident they can get rid of Marquis pretty easily. FWIW Bruce Levine said on the radio today, he expects Marquis traded at the Winter Meetings.

Heres why we arent moving Marquis: Because we need to for the salary space, and every GM out there knows that if they want him , they can get him for virtually nothing, just a low level prospect and take on a chunk of the salary. Meanwhile, Hendry is asking for something in return, other than the salary relief.

JH needs to realise that he will not get a quality player in return for Marquis, simply because of the fact that the other GMs know that they'll be doing him a favor by taking him off his hands.

Bruce Miles:

"I'm hearing from Cubs people that nothing of substance is getting done on moving pitcher Jason Marquis to the Rockies. "

Boo!

The Cubs might have to wait until some free agent pitchers sign before Marquis has value. There's too much pitching on the market right now still.

And most all of it is going to require multi-year deals. If I need a league average pitcher, I'd much prefer one on a one year deal rather than locking a league average guy down for 3-4 years.

This is true. There are also a lot of pitchers who weren't offered arby, others who may be nontendered, and a guy like Marquis will cost players and money.

This is also why it would be nice if Hendry would just get done with this Peavy trade. I'd hate for it to drag out as long as the Marquis sweepstakes could be end up going.

The Rockies have internally discussed acquiring Jason Marquis from the Cubs.

Marquis for Willy Taveras might interest the Rockies if the Cubs were willing to eat some salary, but the Cubs would probably just as soon stick with Kosuke Fukudome and Reed Johnson as their center field combination. MLB.com mentions Jeff Baker as a possibility to be involved. However, if the Rockies want Marquis, it shouldn't cost major league talent.

Who is going to caddy for Harden if Marshall and Marquis are gone?

The dude with the really long last name.

Welcome to the forum

It's probably between Gaudin and Samardzija, though Samardzija will probably need some (alot) of starts at Iowa.

6:47pm: Troy Renck says the Rockies told the Cubs they didn't have room in the budget for Marquis. The Rox may attempt to acquire a starter via trade, using Huston Street and Luis Vizcaino as chips.

would have been nice to not trade for gregg and flip cash + marquis for street

Ya I was just thinking that. Street is a hell of a lot better than kevin gregg has or will ever be.

Schowenweis in his career has allowed lefties to hit .224 off him and righties .294. This season, lefties only hit around .170 off him. Might be an interesting LOOGY option, but I doubt he'd be used that way and I don't know what his contract looks like.
