The White Sox will receive as many three players in return. Infielder Brent Lillibridge is expected to be in the deal, and the White Sox also are targeting a young starting pitcher. Left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes, who was among the pitchers under discussion, is not in the trade, a source said.

The Braves entered the offseason intending to acquire two front-line starting pitchers. When they failed in their attempt to acquire Padres right-hander Jake Peavy, they shifted their attention to free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett and began pursuing other trades.

Why are the White Sox slashing payroll so much after attendance was up last season. Swisher ,Vazquez with Jenks, Dye quite possibly soon on there way out of town also.

As much as I don't like the SOB, I get the feeling that Kenny Williams knows that the window of opportunity with that club (which he basically has kept in tact since 05) has closed, and that he is looking towards 2010/11. He's doing what a good gm should do and that is sell high while they still have good value.

Getting a decent lefty arm, a solid INF prospect, and nice middle of the rotation starter and another prospect for an innings eater---he's best attribute right now---is a nice haul for the Sox.

Now the Vazquez deal gives me hope that the Cubs can move a similar pitcher with a cheaper contract in Marquis at the Winter Meetings.

if by similar you mean they are both pitchers, then yes, they are similar

By similar I mean they are both decent innings eating pitchers. The difference is Marquis contract is a yr shorter.

Vazquez is a much much better pitcher than Marquis. Just because they both eat innings doesn't make them similar

He was much better at pitching, 6 years ago. Vasquez has been fairly mediocre for quite a while, with one good year mixed in. He might be better now, and probably has higher upside. But I don't think he is much better at pitching.*

You must only be looking at era. All of his other numbers are significantly better than Marquis' over the past several years, and most of them are actually quite good.

That depends on your view of the importance of strikeouts and walks when looking at a pitcher.

Single-A catcher Tyler Flowers is supposedly the unnamed third prospect coming from the Braves. He was one of the players the Padres were targeting in their dealings with Atlanta.

Nice.

I haven't looked at his numbers but Javier has been hit pretty hardly for several years now, hasn't he? He's probably better with K's and might walk a few less, but he's essentially an okay innings eater.

He's put up a FIP under 4.00 in each of the last 4 years. The best FIP of Marquis' career was 4.43 his rookie year in StL. He strikes out significantly more hitters, and walks significantly fewer, while there not being much difference how hard they're hit(including HR). He's definitely much better than Marquis.

Wow. Flowers is a beast! I know the Sox love him, and the most recent rumor I'd heard was him going to the Sox with Jermaine Dye going back to the Braves.

Javy is a better pitcher then Marquis, but the Braves also gave up pretty good talent to get him. Not to mention Vazquez is signed for 2y at 23m. While I don't think the Cubs would ask for much in return for Marquis, and a team could probably have him at 1y -6-7m.

Vazquez being better then Marquis is open for debate. Is he more talented, sure. As for being better, I'm not so sure. And if the Braves are willing to eat what is left on Vaz's contract and give up two quality trade assest in Lillbridge and Flowers, then I know there is a team out there who would be willing to take Marquis on for just the one yr. The Cubs wouldn't be asking for a Flowers or Lillbridge type prospect, but a solid 10-15 ranked prospect in the organization is something realistic the Cubs ask for.
