Don't we already sort of have a Teahen in Hoffpauir?

No. Teahen can actually play outfield as well as others positions Hoffpauir can't.

I don't want him though, unless it's for scraps and he's used as a bench player

And the other positions that Teahen plays are positions he won't be playing for the Cubs, thus he really has no more value than a guy we already have that can only play corner outfield positions.

Guys who can lay multiple positions always have more value even if those positions are filled. Felixibility is always welcome and needed over the course of a fukll season.

My point is that I don't get the comparison between Teahen and Hoffpauir. Hoffpauir is a first baseman and can't play the outfield every day. Teahen can, as well as other positions Hoffpauir can't.

How much value does Teahan have playing anywhere other then pitcher with his .715 OPS or 91 OPS+?

He has had one year as an acceptable big league hitter. I would hate to see us give up anything good to get him.

You're completely missing the point. I'm just saying that I don't get the comparison between him and Hoffpauir. I don't want Teahan. My point about positions was that a guy who can play multiple positions has a bit extra value because you can plug him in late in games after double switches or when guys need a day off, blah blah. The only reason I brought it up was because that's something Hoffpauir is not. I don't want Teahen.

Yeah I get that point. I just don't like it the guy who can play multiples can't hit at all and the one who can't can hit a bit. Neifi Perez could play a lot of spots, but I wouldn't want him on my team over Darryl Ward.

Again, I wasn't using it to pump up Teahen. I was using it strictly to show how he's different than Hoffpauir. Nobody here is saying they want him.

Like I said, just trying to be optimistic on him and I'm not much for acquiring him, but if the rumor has truth to it, might as well try and look on the bright side of things

If the guy was already a Cub, I might see the point in trying to look on the bright side of things. But I don't see the reason why you'd want to pretend a bad trade target is better than he is.

Just trying to shake things up a bit... that plus I wasn't breast fed as a child

You weren't Rusch-fed? And would I be correct in inferring that "shake things up" is really a horrible pun? ... oh yeah, Dejesus, please.

Probably :-))

What would it take to get Dejesus? I know he isn't a power guy but he is a solid option if we feel Bradley/Ibanez is too expensive or we feel they can't handle RF/everyday duties. Cedeno, Hart/Ascanio, and Atkins might be enough to get a deal done for Dejesus.

If they want a new RF, go get a good one. Otherwise, just put Fontenot at 2B and DeRosa in RF. No point trading for a mediocre player. If we can get DeJesus from them, Id be interested. Teahen? I wasnt interested in him when there was the possibility of getting him for Matt Murton, and Im not interested in him now. If Hendry gives up Pie for Teahen, between that and the Gregg trade and the Peavy fiasco, I'll officially jump on the fire Jim Hendry bandwagon.

9:51pm: MLB.com's Dick Kaegel has a source saying Dayton Moore and Jim Hendry have not discussed a deal for Teahen or David DeJesus. Moore wouldn't comment publicly on the rumor, while Teahen and his agent are unaware of any trade talks.

Of course if we traded Pie for Teahan it would be a horrible trade. But relax, Pie for Teahan is just the writer coming up with idea's. I'm sure his source said the Cubs are asking about Teahan, and he just came up with names that are being shopped on the Cubs. I remember a few years ago a writer wrote the Cubs could trade Pie for Gerald Laird. So don't believe every rumor you read. As for the Gregg trade, not everyone thinks thats a bad trade, and nobody knows if it's a good or bad trade yet for sure. But how is there a Peavy fiasco?? The Cubs would like to trade for Peavy, and Peavy would like to come here. It's not our fault we don't have the prospects yet to get a deal done. Don't blame Hendry because people are getting excited about Peavy, and we haven't been able to get a deal done yet. If you think Peavy trade talks is a fiasco then I would just stop reading the Peavy rumors.

Whose fault is it?

Nobody, thats baseball and the price we pay for being such a good team. The farm isn't good, but most teams farm systems would be weaker if they just had the ROY just come up through their system. Then guys like Marmol, Theriot and others come up through the system the last few years. Not to mention having to trade Sean Gallagher to get Harden, because Rich Hill fell apart. A year ago at this time, the Cubs might have had enough to get a Peavy done with a good Rich Hill and Gallagher around. Thats why I said thats just baseball.

I would think if Hendry is considering Teahen, he'd be considering him as a platoon option with DeRosa. I doubt he'd want him as an everyday RF.

That said, I still don't particularly want Teahen - especially if he costs much of anything useful. His career OPS against righties is .775. Ouch.

Not too thrilled with Teahen, so I personally think Hoffpauir is the left handed bat the Cubs could use in the 3, 4, or 5 spot, unfortunately it seems he's not the right player to play anywhere but 1st base. Hoffpauir plays a solid 1st base according to Iowa reports. I know Lee has a NTC, but what about looking at some of the west coast teams that need a 1st basemen. Lee may be willing to lift his NTC to be closer to his home in Sacramento. Maybe there's a team out west who needs a 1st baseman in exchange for a left handed hitting RF. I haven't looked at what the Angels, Giants, Oakland, etc. have in that department yet, but maybe someone would take him. You could add the lefty RF and the lefty 1st baseman in Hoffpauir. The Cubs could get two LH bats (Hoffpauir and a LH RF acquisition) with one stone (Lee).

Just for kicks...How about Lee, Theriot, and Kevin Hart for Ichiro Suzuki (not sure if he has a NTC, probably), while signing Furcal for SS.

2009 Line up:

Ichiro RF or CF

Furcal SS

Soriano LF

Rameriz 3B

Hoffpauir 1B

Soto C

DeRosa 2B

Fukudome/Johnson RF or CF Platoon

Pitcher

Just brainstorming...Call me crazy, but I like this lineup, and I think Lou would too.

Who is Rameriz, and why would Seattle trade Ichiro?

Oh no, the spelling police got me... RAMIREZ

Didn't I say "just for kicks", I'm just throwing out some possibilities of getting Hoffpauir's LH bat in the line up by getting rid of Lee. Ichiro is a long shot I'm sure, but stranger things have happened.

I'm not in favor of Hoffpauir in a starting role. If he is in a platoon that's fine, but Hoffpauir is not a starter, imo. So if the Cubs are going to trade Lee they better have a 1st baseman lined up to replace him.

For the record, I wouldnt even trade Cedeno alone for Teahen and his well below .800 career OPS. You need to have more than just a left handed bat to be a help to a team thats a legit playoff contender. Maybe if the Royals would take Marquis alone for him, and take on a significant chunk of his salary(Im aware that would never happen, Im just saying), Id take them up on it. Otherwise, just pay for Abreu.

I realize that this is not the end-all / be-all, but Teahan struck out over 130 times in just over 500 AB's last season, but walked only 30 or 40 times.

Yuck.
