This is Hendry using the greatest leverage tool he has. To walk away when the Padres are asking for the moon.

Towers will now to to Peavy, who will tell Towers he will only accept a trade to the Cubs. Towers will come back to Hendry before the end of the day with his tail between his legs and Hendry will accept the deal on his terms, not Towers.

Start the Peavy to the Cubs trade countdown now......

Do you really believe all that? I have no idea honestly.

They'll have to trade him at some point. So, we'll see what happens.

I would imagine that Towers has to fear losing his job if he doesn't get a deal done. That's not saying his job is on the line, but when the owner tells you that payroll needs to be 40m or less and you don't meet that one requirement, you have to wonder what that means to your future with the organization.

i'm almost glad; the starting pitching is already solid and i wouldn't want them to leave the farm barren and give up derosa as well to upgrade to peavy.

See that's the thing. Trading for Peavy before we signed Dempster made a lot of sense but now that we have the same rotation as last year Peavy was just an added bonus and not a necessity like fixing the offense is. I don't care what the stats say, I can't another year of crappy offense during the playoffs, it needs to be shaken up.

Well if we sign Bradley, trade Marquis and maybe do something else, I'll get over it.

I know we didn't really need him him but I wanted Peavy. I guess it's good we didn't overpay and JH wouldn't let himself get jerked around.

Are the Dodgers totally out of the running?

Unless Towers reconsiders.

I'm not really sure what Towers was thinking publicly excluding them and further minimizing his leverage in this situation. Why be so open about it?

Actually, I do. The Roberts rumors last year were dead a few times, as well.

I honestly wish they interview Peavy. I would really like to hear what he has to say. I mean if he really did sing "Go Cubs Go" and was psyched about coming to the cubs, how much of a letdown is this to him? Would it be such a letdown that he would go back mad at towers? Unlike some posters on here i dont think he will go back to towers and say i demand you trade me to the cubs or that he would pressure towers but i think in some way he would make it difficult for Towers. It just annoys me that Towers acted during these dealings as if he had the leverage and the cubs needed peavy more than towers needed the trade. I dont think the Cubs will revisit the talks unless Towers calls them because Hendry probably feels annoyed by Towers and his Demands kind of like the deal with the Orioles. My only question now is, what are other teams offering for Derosa that as reported, 10 teams called the cubs for him? Pie is almost certainly gone so what trade will he be invovled in. If we do sign a FA to play right, i wonder what trade we will make. It would be very annoying if the cubs signed Randy Johnson, to me he's no better than putting Marshal or marquis at that spot of the rotation.

I doubt Towers would trade his best player to a division rival unless there were absolutely no other options.

Im not buying all the leverage talk. The deals dead for all practical purposes. The one glimmer of hope is remembering the 2006 off season when Ramirez was for sure skipping town, and then out of nowhere, Hendry got him back.

Lets just re title this thread R.I.P. Peavy to Cubs and get on with our lives. I never want to hear or read the words Peavy, Towers, or Imminent again.

And it was a joy seeing Roberts play 2B for us last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hendry is using his leverage, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it actually was dead. Hopefully we can get Bradley signed soon.

Outside of risk of injury, Johnson would probably be better than Marquis.

Only when he faces the Cubs.

The Cubs pulled out.

Is there a penalty for early withdrawl? :D

Hendry knows the pressure is on Towers to move Peavy so the Cubs have "hand". Peavy also has "hand" since he has a NTC and can basically name where he wants to play. My feeling is the Cubs and Peavy have a "hand-shake" agreement and it is only a matter of time before Towers lowers his demands to the Cubs.

It's certainly worth listening to offers for DeRosa, but the guy is a true pro and way too valuable to the Cubs (all things considered) for them to trade him unless it's a deal that knocks Jim's socks off...and my guess is that Jim has been wearing sandals all week!

I doubt it came down to money. It sounds like the Pads wanted 6-7 players for Peavy. You can't fault them for asking, but I am glad Jim didn't give in. The Mets didn't have to give up that much for Santana!

I think Jim is still holding the cards. If they keep him, no big deal, we know we won't have to face him in the playoffs!

Towers took a hatchet to the offseason plans from day 1. This is his mess. Well, I suppose he shares it with Moores, but Moores won't be taking responsibility. There was little reason for them to lay all their cards on the table.

Towers very easily could have went to Peavy and his agent and requested to keep things mum about a trade. Towers then could have come back with "we have about 10 teams interested in Peavy" to gain some leverage. Instead, they were very open about what teams Peavy might have interest in, which eliminated most of the teams from expressing interest. Look at the DeRosa interest right now. There might really only be 2 or 3 teams interested, but the Cubs have it up to 10 teams. That's called leverage and working up a guys value to get as much return as necessary.

Towers blew it from the get go. I'm not sure how interested he is in staying on board a sinking ship, but he can't be winning many points for future jobs right now. Their minor league team is a joke. The major league team is a joke. The trade of David Freese for Jim Edmonds is going to bite them in the behind. And then not meeting budget could be the final straw.

Which is kind of dumb given the circumstances. He should trade him to whoever gives him the best package. The Padres aren't going to compete with anyone in the near future anyway.

Where did that rumor come from? I haven't seen anything publicly said about the Cubs by Peavy. Does anyone have any links about anything Peavy has said? (I haven't been following this at all this offseason).

For all intents and purposes, Roberts would have been a Cub if it weren't for the owner nixing the deal. Moores isn't going to interfere with a deal that reduces payroll.

I forgot where it was written, i think the tribune, someone posted a link on here but i wonder if the following post was before towers spoke to hendry? Supposedly hendry is talking to the media in 30 minutes:

I'm not buying the leverage theory either. It's not Hendry's style. He's built this straight-shooter reputation so it seems pretty silly to think all of a sudden he's started playing games. If Hendry says he's out, then that probably means he's out.

Now Towers could come back begging, but I wouldn't count on that, either.

Well, we had our own guy here who said he ran into Peavy in Puerto Rico and that Peavy said he wanted to come here. The Go Cubs, Go rumor came from Roman Modrowski's blog on the Sun-Times site.

If the Padres trade is dead forever, trade DeRosa to the Twins for the pitching package they are offering. Trade that package to Florida for Hermida. Trade Marquis to anyone who will take him and then sign Furcal. Trade Pie for relief help. Done.

I'm starting to get worried that Hendry second guesses too much, i feel it might come back and bite us. I mean last year roberts could've made us a better team. This year, what if Dempster flops and harden gets injured, we probably might regret not trading for Peavy. If the deal was vitters, pie, derosa, marquis and marshall, i would be annoyed if hendry didnt pull the trigger.
