2:37pm: Joel Sherman learned from Towers that if he doesn't reach an agreement on a Peavy deal with the Cubs at the Meetings, he will keep the pitcher to start the season. The Dodgers are apparently the only other team to which Peavy has approved a trade.

Sherman adds that the Cubs "are willing to let [Peavy] keep his no-trade clause." Not sure if Sherman is trying to say the Cubs would replace Peavy's partial no-trade rights for 2011 and part of 2012 with full no-trade powers.

That's not quite what Towers said.

He basically said if "progress" wasn't made by the end of the meetings, he'd have to stop the talks. There is nothing serious going on yet between these two teams. I'm blogging like a crazy man, if you want to stop by at the Daily Herald. I'll do the best I can to check in here.

can you please blog that Willy Taveras would be a terrible lead-off option and a terrible option period?

Towers kind of contradicts himself, because he already says progress has been made:

"We have made progress, but if it is not worked out with the Cubs, I don't want to go into Christmas with so many holes and still working on this," Towers said.

By the sound of it,

A. We have what the Pads want, be it by oursleves or with a second team, so JH just needs to give it to them, unless its Soto. With the kind or rotaion wed have with P/Z/H/L/D, we could afford to slap togethe the right side of the outfield between Johnson/Fuku/DeRosa/Hoffpauir.

B. Peavys being a pain in the Howry hole about this. He demands a trade, but will only accept it to 2 teams.

I think one thing i wonder about and hoping Bruce can answer this, is do GMs usually tells writers like Bruce the truth? I mean what i like about Bruce is that he doesn't speculate too much, he basically tells you what he heard from the mouth of Hendry but then you have other writers that report on pure speculation or what one person told another or what friend told you blah blah. So I wonder if Hendry tells Bruce that they're just talking, if thats the truth or if he's just saying it to take the attention off at the moment. I wonder this because sometimes you get a report saying that two teams are just talking and then next minute a deal gets done or the next minute a report comes out denying the story.

Now this ESPN thing goes with what Bruce said:

Padres GM Kevin Towers said he needs to "have a good feel … when [he leaves] these meetings" about whether there's a deal to be made with the Cubs for Jake Peavy or not. He said that deal wouldn't have to be done before the end of the meetings, but at least by "shortly after we leave here."

The art of the deal, Towers says, is based on building relationships and understanding your potential trading partners.

“Guys that you've got good relationships with, usually there's less cat-and-mouse games,” Towers said before leaving San Diego for baseball's winter meetings. “Certain guys deal differently. Jim Hendry with the Cubs is very open, up-front, has a good feeling for value. Like with (Jake) Peavy, (Hendry's) not going to embarrass you and say, well, 'This guy's not available, this guy's not available, this guy's not available.' It's more, 'If I'm going to be in the running for Peavy, everybody's available.' ”

If Towers trades his pitching ace to the Cubs this winter, it will be partially the product of the personal relationship he has forged with his Cubs'contemporary.

Hendry has already told Towers to be cautious about a particular Cubs'prospect because of medical issues that might not otherwise have come to light. In a business where such information is precious and is often considered proprietary, establishing trust and cultivating candor are critical to getting deals done.

Nice quotes there.

Not to turn this into another Hendry debate, but fans just don't get how important it is to have a GM that everyone considers honest and up front about everything. Without that trait, it's highly doubtful he lands Harden and he'd probably have no shot at Peavy.

hear hear

hendry does seem to get lots of praise around the league...i like the man and his honest work ethic...he seems like he is a straight shooter

Hendry is damn good at acquiring the players he sets his sights on... usually at a low cost (whether in terms of money/years or talent).

He's not so good at picking which players to set his sights on.

From my perspective, Hendry is as honest as they get. He can't always tell you everything, but he'll steer you in the right direction. The two teams have NOT sat down and talked here seriously. That's from Hendry and SD people. He said what he could about Harden last summer and about Ramirez in '03.

Like I said before, a lot of trades come out of nowhere: Gregg and even Derrek Lee.

As far as honesty goes, Hendry gets an A-plus. And he's not much for the "posturing" game either.

Now, Towers goes about things differently, but he seems to have been pretty honest, too.

Hendry is that way with players, too. I asked Koyie Hill last spring why he came back again as a non-roster guy. He said it was because Hendry and Fleita shot straight with him and didn't make any false promises.

I was disappointed to see Eyre celebrating and laughing with one of the Phillies (Meyers? maybe?) who said something to the effect of " Suck on it Hendry" in the clubhouse after they won the WS. Eyer, of all people, knows that Hednry did all he could to trade him to a contender because he told him he would.

Kinda seems to me like after you just won a World Series you wouldn't be thinking about your old team, unless it was where you really wanted to be.

I think it was Jenkins who said that in front of the camera and Eyre told him not to say that or something to that effect.

Actually it was Lou Piniella, and its wasn't "Suck it Lou" it was like "I wish Lou was here to see this" or something like that.

I'd probably hate Lou Piniella if I was Scott Eyre too.

Eyre and Lou hated each other before Lou even started here. Eyre was mad Dusty left, since Dusty didn't make him run wind sprints.

Towers hasn’t had a sitdown with Hendry yet, but said “he knows where to find me.” They are expected to meet Monday night.
Towers said he has the sense that Hendry “doesn’t want to drag this thing out,” though it’s already been dragged out for almost two months.

I like the building wave of inevitability.

I refuse to believe this is happening until it has. Don't want to get way up only to be let down. That would be too much like the playoffs.

Meaning I will be glued to NSBB all night.

I was all set to assume the deal wouldn't be announced until Tuesday, in honor of Ron Santo's day in the sun. But, then the Veteran's Committee ruined that.

With Cub fans being let down about Santo, I think they should reward them with a Peavy deal.
