Do you think anything could get done at the meetings next week, or is it just likely to be more talk?

Something definitely can get done. It'll be a lot of talk, to be sure. A lot of times deals come out of nowhere, liked the Gregg deal, which nobody predicted. I suspect they'll talk seriously with the agents for the hitters while keeping an eye on the San Diego situation. As someone else pointed out, there still could be a fair amount of players left well into the new year. Burnitz was signed the day the Cubs traded Sosa. Maddux signed in '04 on the day before players reported.

Never been to Vegas before, and I'm not a gambler. But the hotel bar(s) are full of baseball people. It's a good place to be.

Realistically, I wouldn't expect a lot to get done in Vegas. It's the worst place for a convention. We conduct our conventions in Vegas, and everyone is off to see shows, eat at good restaraunts, take in the sights, and gamble. I'd expect a lot of the dealings to be done over the phone, and phones don't work very well on the casino floor.

Nashville is lousy, too, because the Opryland complex is so huge there's no easy way for people to congregate. Could be more of the same, plus all the other distractions, in Vegas.

Bruce, why do you believe that a player like Bradley who has a hair trigger on all criticisms of him being rooted in the fact he is black, would be a good fit at Wrigley? That just looks like trouble after a couple of bad slumps

i don't know if you meant it that way, but holy hell that sounded racist.

Not sure right now who their No. 1 priority is for RF. I'm not sure they know, given the market and who might want what. As far as Bradley goes, I've never met the man.

Vegas is pretty bad for meeting in general, unless you can actually get people into the meeting rooms. The bars aren't designed for people to just casually relax and rub elbows. They are either very loud with music or have table top video games or some other form of distraction.

It's also very difficult getting everyone to agree on a particular place to meet, since there are so many different places. It's not like when you go into the Adam's Mark in St. Louis and everyone knows where everyone will be.

If you are having that problem, may I recommend you grab a taxi or two with the group you wish to socialize with, and take it to the Firefly on Paradise. It's a very casual atmosphere that serves drinks and appetizer foods in a laid back, comtemporary setting. It's a very short cab ride away from the VH and they serve amazing Tapas. There's a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in the same complex.

Well as you probably know, the story circulated last summer about Bradley venturing up to the press box to "introduce himself" to some media member who had either said or written something less than flattering about him.

So, you know, if you ever feel like making the acquaintance...

Thanks. That sounds like a plan. Orlando was pretty good for getting stuff done. I still remember Ted Lilly's agent holding court right next to this huge Christmas tree on the same night Jim Hendry was having his heart procedure. Dallas was OK for the winter meetings. In Nashville, you have to walk a half-mile inside the Opryland to get anyplace. I'm sure you're right about Vegas. Other reporters have said about the same thing.

Maybe I'm a crazy backwards baseball fan, but the off season trade/FA speculation combined with it being prospect list season makes this my favorite time of year.

Me too but that's because October is not much fun for us.

Yeah, I remember that. Ah, but it's too long of a walk to the Wrigley press box.

If that's how it came across, it was unintended. However, in the past, Bradly has had issues accusing teammates (kent), fans (Boston) and media of racism. I'm not an expert on the racial tensions in MLB, he may be right to an extent because I have witnessed first hand how awful fans were to Hawkins and Jones. Neither Hawking or Jones were confrontational with the idiots in the stands but something tells me Bradley wouldn't be so passive.

Cubs still in hunt for Peavy?

By Tom Krasovic

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

7:30 p.m. December 5, 2008

The chances of the Padres and Cubs pulling off a Jake Peavy trade appear on the rise, if the latest financial report on the Cubs is to be believed.

Money had been a hangup, according to Padres General Manager Kevin Towers, who said Cubs GM Jim Hendry had concerns about stretching his payroll.

But the Chicago Sun Times is reporting the Cubs are now optimistic they can afford a left-handed hitter and a starting pitcher without great difficulty. Reportedly, the pending sale of the club is not a big obstacle to increasing payroll.

Peavy is guaranteed $63 million over the next four years, $11 million in 2009.

The Padres and Cubs have discussed a 5-for-1 swap, among other scenarios, which would also involve the Baltimore Orioles. The Padres like their chances of getting Josh Vitters, a Single-A third baseman who is the Cubs' best prospect, Cubs starting pitcher Sean Marshall, reliever Kevin Hart, another player and Orioles left-hander Garrett Olson.

Towers will be in Las Vegas on Saturday for the winter meetings, which open Monday.

Hey Bruce, where are you staying at out in Vegas? My parents are gonna be out there and were wondering where to go if they wanted to catch a few marginal big-leaguers trying to sell themselves to the GMs.

He's renting a room at Moonlite Ranch.

Something tells me my father would enjoy staying out there a lot more than my mother would.

Thanks for stopping in Bruce as usual.

If you have a minute....you mentioned the sale is not a holdup for the Cubs correct? So whenever someone uses that as an excuse its not to be believed in your opinion? So the Cubs are operating like business as usual then?

I'm assuming he's referring to the moonlite bunny ranch. If so, then if by unattractive you mean "extremely hot" then yes, I'd agree (with one or two exceptions looking at their website).

i've never looked at the site, but i've seen the show on hbo and 99% of the girls are BRUTAL looking. like, not even remotely attractive. trust me. i guess the site has a much bigger/better selection

I dunno if this is posted yet, but it's a interview with Kevin Towers.

Now, they'll turn their attention back to dealing away ace Jake Peavy: Padres general manager Kevin Towers said he expects to speak with his Chicago Cubs counterpart, Jim Hendry, about Peavy at the winter meetings in Las Vegas next week.

"Things usually always heat up when you can talk face-to-face," Towers said Thursday evening. "I've had ongoing dialog with Jim Hendry, and we plan on getting together in Las Vegas and furthering our conversations.

"We've identified a couple of clubs that could work as third teams (to help facilitate a Peavy deal between the Padres and Cubs).

"After they re-signed (Ryan) Dempster it probably became more difficult, but Jim has assured me he'll do everything he can to make it happen. Maybe it's more complicated now (with Dempster having re-signed)."

Indications are that, if he is to be traded, Peavy is doing what he can to steer that ship toward Chicago.

"It's the one place I don't think they're looking for a lot of concessions on a deal," Towers said of Peavy and his agent, Barry Axelrod. "If it was to the East Coast, they may look for his option to be picked up or the deal to be re-done.

"Chicago's a good ballclub, a good market, and they're in a good division. That seems to be attractive to Jake. Hendry is a good guy to deal with.

"I'm holding out hope we can get something done."

When do winter meetings start?

They run Monday-Thursday of next week, if I'm not mistaken. So it's basically four days of refreshing your baseball news feed of choice, lest you miss a big announcements.
