I didn't see this being discussed anywhere.

Link.

Jim Hendry and company are busy pursuing pitchers who would, hopefully, push the team beyond the first round of the playoffs. The Cubs' own Ryan Dempster and San Diego righty Jake Peavy are high on the Cubs' list.

Would a deal of Pie, Cedeno, and Marshall be enough?

Stay on the topic of Jake Peavy trade talks in this thread. Thanks.

Last year, the package the Twins got for Santana didn't look all that great which gives hope that the Cubs can put something together for Peavy.

Pie, Vitters, Hill, Cedeno, Theriot, Wuertz and Marquis + cash for Peavy and Greene. It's not a great package but it clears salary which is the object of the execercise plus it gives them some pieces that can be plugged in right away. Marquis could thrive in the spacious confines of Petco. At the very least he'd buy time for their pitching prospects and eat innings. Hill could be a real steal having escaped the clutches of uncle Larry. Pie and Cedeno's gap power + speed work better at Petco than they would at Wrigley. Theriot is gritty. He also hit 300 last year which has value to some people.

Wow, talk about gutting the farm system ..

Based on what we know, the Braves are out. The Cubs are the only team left on Peavy's list that still is trying to get him.

So, a couple of things could happen.

The Padres go back to Peavy and tell him that either needs to expand his list or prepare to remain a Padre. Now, if the Padres do this, Peavy could call their bluff and refuse to expand his list of teams. Then I guess what Towers does would depend on how strong the mandate to move Peavy is. If he has to move him, he'll either take the Cubs deal or call the Braves back and see if they are still willing to deal.

Peavy could expand his list which would open things up to a few other teams.

The Padres could also wait until the FA market shakes out and hope the Cubs and Braves get outbid by other teams for the free agents they seek and get desperate to go. Of course, that could backfire if both the Cubs and Braves are able to sign other players.

If you happen to believe Donnie, though, he wouldn't approve a trade to the Braves, anyway.

I do, but mainly because that's been what I've suspected all along.

It's my understanding that Peavy doesn't wish/need to be traded. It's the Padres who have to get rid of him.

He's going to get traded, it just matters to whom and for what. Both the Braves and the Cubs know this and so does every other team too. For the life of me I cannot understand why Towers didn't pull the trigger with the Braves unless Peavy really did tell them he wouldn't go (DonnieD's info).

Anyway, The Cubs offer is pretty bad for a pitcher of his calibre, but if they're patient they just might get him, at least I'm hoping so.

Not necessarily. If speculation that he really values a contender (i.e. Cubs over the Braves) is true, than he most certainly does want to get away from SD.

Well I think if he could stay in the home he just built and not have to moveh is family, that would be more important than winning. I think the "go to a contender" thing is just if he MUST be traded

I bet they hang onto Peavy until the deadline.

Then they'd have to pay him for over a half season.

Also, how quickly does ownership want this firesale happening? I've heard something about a divorce...

Most likely.

The Cubs just don't have the talent to get this done without completely raping their farm system.

I dunno. I get the sense that if the Cubs could find a third team willing to give up the sort of good young pitcher that the Cubs don't have to offer, then this could get done.

The impact acquiring said good young pitcher would have on the Cubs' farm system is surely open to debate, of course.

I'd put a call in to Tampa and see how they feel about the many candidates for their '09 rotation. A guy like Andy Sonnanstine might be just what the Dr. ordered here. Sonnanstine could have the sort of success moving from the AL to SD that Chris Young had.

Waiting until the deadline has a few downsides:

1) the risk of Peavy suffering injury or underperformance

2) the whole paying him for half the year thing

3) teams at the deadline would be less likely to part with key contributors to the bigleague team, but they might in the offseason, when replacements figure to be easier to find

4) an already limited list of acceptable suitors could only get shorter if one or two teams are having a down season

Playing IN San Diego and playing FOR San Diego are two totally different personal desires, and based on what we know, I'd be willing to bet Peavy is more of the playing IN San Diego camp. I mean have you been there? The weather is perfect. I'm surprised free agents don't clamor to sign there...

But it's probably because they like playing for contenders, which San Diego most certainly is not, and which is why I'm also willing to bet Peavy is dying to go to a real team that can contend for a championship, which is why I can see him agreeing to a trade to the AL if it's the Angels (since they won't trade him to the Dodgers)

Peavy makes enough money that he can move his family no problem, I'm sure. And if Donnie's story is true, it doesn't sound like they really care where they go to as long as it's a contender (or Atlanta [orToronto]).

why would he consider toronto? In the AL East they fail to sign burnett or any other FA pitchers why would he even bother they then even with peavy at least two bats and probably arm away from contending with the Rays or Bo Sox let alone a re-arming yankees. If the Bo Sox are able to get involved with any gusto he's heading there. Too many overhyped prospects and overhyped players not for it to happen.

Boston has as much chance at landing Peavy as the Yankees. Which means....they have NO SHOT at landing Peavy. If Giles can veto a trade to Boston yoou can almost bet with all certaintly that Boston would get the same treatment from Peavy.

DonnieD's story talked about how his wife said "I'll follow him anywhere, I'm just along for the ride. Just as long as it's not Toronto" or something like that, if you so choose to believe the story, which I personally choose to

I heard an interview with Gary Hughes on XM yesterday. He said the Cubs are in all out win now mode. I guess they figure the new owner will give them the money they need to rebuild the farm down the road.
