Talked about this in the Peavy thread as spec on my part now Rosenthal and the Tribune are reporting interest from the Cubs end.

One day after severing ties with closer Kerry Wood, the Cubs began exploring Friday the possibility of signing left-hander Randy Johnson to a one-year deal.

General manager Jim Hendry still hopes to re-sign Ryan Dempster, but he's moving ahead with contingency plans in case Dempster leaves. The Cubs are said to have offered a four-year deal in the $50 million range, but Toronto, Atlanta and at least two other teams are looking at the veteran right-hander.

Johnson's agent, Alan Nero, told the Tribune on Friday that Johnson "would seem to be a perfect fit" for the Cubs.

"First, there is the Lou factor," he said, referring to Lou Piniella, who managed Johnson in Seattle. "And second, it's the National League. There's no question the Cubs would be on his short list."

Hendry was unavailable for comment, but club sources confirmed the team would be interested in Johnson if Dempster left and their bid for San Diego's Jake Peavy was rejected, which appears likely.

RJ for closer.

Now that's a pretty good idea. He probably wouldn't go for it, though.

Probably? Only reason he is still playing is to get to 300 wins.

By the way, it would be fun to see him get win #300 as a Cub. He only needs 5 more.

Seems like that's all we're good for lately...

Maddux, Glavine, Johnson. Who's next?

I wouldn't mind adding Randy Johnson, and honestly think it would be pretty cool to have him. But at his age with a bad back, I don't think we can count on him being our number 3 or 4 starter. Especially with Rich Harden most likely due to miss some starts here and there. I still think Johnson would be looking for contract at 1y around 8 or 9m though.

This quote in the article scares the Howry out of me. If Dempster somehow signs elsewhere the "contingency plan" had better be Derek Lowe, AJ Burnett, or get a deal done for Peavy at all costs. Signing Randy Johnson to a one year deal is not a contingency plan.

No way we are going to outbid NY for Lowe or Burnett.

It's just a gut feeling, but I truly think Hendry is looking at getting 2 #1-#3 type starters. It could be Peavy/Dempster, Peavy/RJ, Dempster/RJ, or throw a Lowe/Burnett type in there as well. The story mentioning still being able to afford Dempster even if they get Peavy is why I truly believe that. I also think you'll see Marquis moved, and that's why they want 2 guys. Even with RJ, that's still an upgrade, albeit, a short term one. With the combined dollars for Peavy and Demp, on an annual basis, any 2 of those guys I mentioned could be had for that cost.

I agree. But, assuming they get CC, they aren't going to be able to get every decent starter on the market. If they don't get CC, then yes, that makes Hendry's job a whole lot harder.

I think they are going after CC and Burnett and/or Lowe. Don't forget they are getting 80 million off the books and a new stadium. They have a ton of cash to burn.

Exactly. Even if they didn't have that money coming off the books, they'd still have a ton to spend. The Yankees are going to get whoever opts to accept their deals.

I'd like RJ for a one year deal whether we get Peavy or not. I really want no part of resigning Dempster, I have little faith that he'd be worth it next year, much less 4 or 5 years down the road.

Peavy/RJ

or

RJ/Lowe or Burnett (I'm assuming the Yankees won't sign both along with CC)

So it'd be either:

Peavy/Zambrano/RJ/Harden/Lilly

or

Z/Harden/RJ/Lowe or Burnett/Lilly

Either one of those rotations would easily be the best in the majors. Trade for Hermida and call it an offseason.
