College Football - Week of 11/15

I remember watching Ball St. play in 2005 and they were one of the worst teams I have ever seen (granted a bunch of their team was suspended). How the hell did they become good?

You missed the worst of them. In 1998 and 1999 (the low point of Bill Lynch's reign of error) they were a combined 1-21.

I'll take tonight's win. I thought the pieces were in place for a possible upset (Miami playing at home, against their biggest rival, and focusing on this one game while Ball State had to be thinking of their upcoming games). Miami really shot themselves in the foot, dropping two easy catches (one of which would have been a touchdown) and burning all of their second-half time-outs while there were still over 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Hey let's look at efficiency of offenses ignoring quality of defenses. Don't worry I am working on ways to implement this. Somethings to consider:

1. Right now all penalties are ignored.

2. Right now all special teams are ignored. This is because I am measuring OFFENSE.

These won't map to total points scored because there are other factors determining where you start. Namely your defense, special teams and penalties. But we're not concerned with those. We're only concerned about offense.

A few observations:

1. Yes: Some offenses have negatively affected their teams.

2. WTF, LSU. What I haven't taken off for are points going the other way. Ie a pick 6 hurting your team by 6 points. I am thinking of just looking at turnovers independently. Right now a turnover is like failing on fourth down.

3. Everyones been bitching about the lack of offense USC has shown. USC's offense has been quite good. It's their special teams and defense creating turnovers that appears to keep points off the board, not so much the offense.

Now we can do the same thing for defenses.

Apparently there were multiple arrests today at FSU, when several players got into a fight with members of a fraternity (Sigma?). 2-3 WR's, 1-2 RB's, and a CB. From all accounts that I've received, it was a pretty bad sight, but the players held their own against a bigger group of guys.

I can only assume that this means we'll be looking at more suspensions this week.

Dan LeFevour is a terrifying man. NIU trying to make things interesting here, though.

They forced it to OT, but I knew they had to get a TD when they were inside CMU's 10 with that little time remaining.

They've been competitive in every game they've been in, save the Ball St. game, so that's an improvement. Unfortunately, this is a senior-oriented team so I don't really see this team doing too much more next year. Luckily both the QB and RB positions are manned by underclassmen, so that won't be a problem. But all of NIU's good WR's are seniors and Larry English is going to be gone. Next year is probably going to be another rebuilding year for NIU.

Yeah. It did help to see you guys put the clamps on Dan later and get some offense going. If you can do both those things then we should be able to. Next week's game is going to be insane. I'm nervous already.

Rumor:

Supposedly Arkansas is wanting out of the SEC and wants to move into the Big XII. This makes a lot of sense given their ties to the SWC and the fact that the SWC is more or less the Big XII south. Supposedly there is interest from Missouri moving into the Big Ten? I Don't know if that is true or speculation. Iowa State's defection would be most likely (to the Big Ten). Supposedly South Florida and Florida State would be the SEC's top choices for replacements.

I dont this ever happens, the rest beyond Arkansas seems to be speculation

Adding Mizzou not only adds a natural rival for Illinois and Iowa, but also makes for an easy East/West split into two divisions (along the Illinois/Indiana border). Maintains Wis/Minn, Wis/Ill, Ill/NW, MSU/UM, UM, OSU, IU/PUR, etc.

guess i should read the whole post.

i can't see florida st leaving the acc; they've been in there for a long time. i can definitely see USF going to the sec, if they were asked to join. i can't see big basketball programs defecting from the big east or acc, which would eliminate the NC schools and louisville, but i could see schools like USF or clemson defecting.
