Stupid thought, and not trying to step on b-t-b's toes here, but could a three way with FLA and SD work?

I'd love to see Hermida in RF next year.

I wonder if Olsen could be a piece in a Peavy trade.

Same thought I had. He'd look better at Petco than Wrigley, I'd think. Although last year was a good improvement over 2007, he still had some bad home/away splits.

Good call. This could get interesting. Who would we have to give up for both of them though?

You called?

Cubs sign Furcal and then trade Marshall, Veal/Hart, and Ceda to Marlins for Hermida and Olsen.

Cubs trade Olsen, Pie, Theriot, and Hill to SD for Peavy.

Furcal @ SS, Hermida in RF, and Peavy in the rotation.

Can someone explain why Hill would have any value at all?

Because if someone can fix whatever is going on with him, they'd have a really nice #2-3 starter.

Has anyone thought of getting him those Rick Vaughn glasses? Maybe that would help.

I like the idea of this trade, I think Hermida is on the verge of a break out Carlos Quentin type season. So I would trade any prospect not name Josh Vitters to get him right now. Scott Olsen I don't see much of a upgrade over Sean Marshall, but he is younger, has better stuff and seems to be more durable. So I wouldn't mind Olsen as a 4th starter next year. It would also give the Cubs some options, and not put them in a spot were they need to over spend on Dempster or another starter. Even though I'm sure they would like to add another SP still, but they wouldn't need to.

I'd much rather send Olsen on to SD in a deal for Peavy. I'm not completely sold on Olsen, as far as the Cubs. He seems to pitch well at home, which is a fairly pitcher friendly park, not so much on the road. I don't know how he'd do pitching 15-20 times a year in Wrigley.

Marshall has been nearly as good, as a starter, as Olsen, while pitching in a more hitter fiendly park, and is only a year older than Olsen.

I wouldn't say no to the deal cause we'd get Hermida, even if we kept Olsen. But between the two I'd rather have Marshall.

My Hermida love is well documented. I also like Olsen too, though he is a jerk. If the Cubs could turn Olsen into Peavy, it would be an offseason for the ages.

Heard a snippet on the ESPN1000 update that Levine is reporting that the Cubs are talking to the Marlins about Jeremy Hermida and Scott Olsen.

What about this three way?

Cubs get: Jake Peavy, Jeremy Hermida, and Kevin Gregg

Padres get: Scott Olsen, Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno, Jose Ascanio/Kevin Hart, and Sean Marshall

Marlins get: Kyle Blanks, Wellington Castillo, and Jose Ceda

When projecting Olsen, it's important to keep in mind he's over a year younger than Sean Marshall.

Getting Hermida and Peavy would make me a very happy camper, and if we were to keep Olsen that'd be fine too. Especially if that meant doing something like trading Lee and making a run at Teixeira.

Olsen would be nice. He is a Cubs fan afterall

And a tremendous d-bag.

He would probably get a DWI on his way to a day game in Chicago.

Cubs too much. Marlins too little.

Agree there.

One could envision a scenario where Olsen's attitude issues are such that the Marlins would take Marshall for him straight up. Kinda sketchy IMO, but plausible.

That leaves them sending Hermida for Ceda and junk. Big no on that one. Add Pie, though, and now you're talking.

I know I'll be in the minority on this one, but frankly I'd be OK with dropping the Peavy pursuit and "settling" with an offseason of:

Dumping Marquis and recouping $5-6M of his $10M

Re-signing Wood and Dempster

Acquiring Hermida and Olsen -- Olsen to Marquis' #5 slot

Spending the Marquis savings on a reliever like Cruz or Affeldt.

Lineup: improved w/ Hermida

Rotation: basically unchanged but more upside Olsen vs. Marquis

Bullpen: improved w/ Cruz/Affeldt

Does anyone else see Olsen being packaged with D. Lee in a deal to SD for Jake Peavy?

If that were to happen, what would the Cubs do at 1B? DeRosa? Free agent? Trade?
