I think he'll get Abreu.

When the past couple of years has Hendry not gotten the guy he wanted?

Furcal.

Gil Meche.

The 2nd baseman who will remain nameless, in fear of this board blowing up.

why the hell would he sign garrett anderson to start in the outfield? he makes some dumb decisions sometimes, but he's not [expletive]

Didn't Hendry want him to sign a contract with a clause in his contract that said if he gets another DUI, the Cubs can void the contract?

I thought that was one of the reasons why he went to LA, but I might be wrong.

The question shoud, if Hendry wants Furcal this time around would he be willing to not include that clause on that cause. The feeling I got was, if Hendry didn't add that DUI clause to his proposal the Cubs had a great shot at landing Furcal three yrs ago. Furcal at SS, Theriot/Fonetnot at 2b, DeRo in RF, Fuku in CF, sounds good to me.

Due to Piniella, Jim Hendry pays alot more attention to OBP then he did in the past. Like many have said Hendry works with his manager to build a team. Adding a veteran, who hits for average and still has some power, but doesn't get on base. Is something we probably had to worry about with Dusty managing the team. But Hendry hasn't really gone after those type of players with Lou. Thats the reason why he got a contract extension and why most Cubs fans are actually happy he's back. Plus Lou mentioned he would probably add a LH bat through a trade, and wanted to get younger and more athletic. Adding a hitter who will be 37 next year is pretty much the oppsite of that. Plus I don't see Soriano moving to RF anytime soon.

Also keep in mind Andy MacPhail was around then, and wouldn't let Hendry match the Dodgers offer even if he wanted to. The last two offseason, Hendry has gotten most of the free agents he wanted. His top hitter and pitcher in 06-07 were Soriano/Lilly and we got them both. He also wanted Gil Meche that year, but after signing Soriano/Lilly already he couldn't come close to matching the Royals offer.

But if we didn't already sign Lilly, I doubt Hendry would have lost Meche to the Royals that offseason. Then last year of course Fukudome was the Cubs top free agent target, and Hendry got him. So if there is a free agent out there Hendry really wants, I'll be confident we can get him. Just like I'm confident that most of the time Hendry will get our own players resigned for market value or below market value. Hendry has some faults as a GM, but getting players to come here and resigning players is one of his strengths.

You should have reflected your second statement in your first. It's more accurate to say that Hendry strayed from his roots with regards to OBP because of Dusty, and has since returned to center and even moved right with Lou. But it's not like Hendry as baseball person was oblivious to OBP pre-Lou.

His biggest mistake was starting his GM career with Dusty.

Every indication was he was as oblivious as a GM could be to the value of OBP. He talked of hitting not walking, and scoffed at media questions regarding OBP. Throughout his time in the minors, the Cubs completely ignored patience as a virtue with hitters, it was 100% about tools with no focus on approach and actual production.

And Garrett Anderson would be the dumbest of the dumb moves. I don't think it will happen.

Wouldn't re-signing Edmonds be a MUCH better idea than signing Anderson?

Absolutely.

Anderson is only a couple years younger. And while people focus, justly, on his horrible lack of OBP, he can't hit for power either. He hasn't crossed the 20 HR threshold since 2003. He's less of a hitter than Mike Fontenot.

I'd almost put money on the fact that this won't happen.

Hendry isn't that dumb. Garrett Anderson has had two very good years when he was slugging the crap out of the ball. Other than those two seasons, he hasn't even come close to being a good player. His OBP is awful year in and year out. He's a bad baseball player, and I think Jim knows that.

Not to mention Anderson is a terrible defender.

The only way Anderson is in a Cubs uniform is.... a spring training invite for the league minimum, much like Marquis Grissom a few years ago

I had completely forgotten about that little experiment, kind of like I will have about the Shingo experiment this time next year.
