As far as Furcal goes and Hendry not getting his man, I don't think MacPhail was the one holding that one up. Nor was it any DUI clause or anything. It was maybe the one case where Hendry refused to pay more than a guy was worth. Colletti ultimately offered him far more per year than anyone believed he was worth at the time for only three years instead of 5-6 that everyone else was offering, which enabled him to seek another big FA payday before he got too old. The price simply got to exceed what his real value was, and Hendry graciously bowed out.

 

I have full faith in Hendry "getting his man." Unfortunately, I have little faith in Hendry picking the right guy to be "his man." I would have rather seen him go all out for Vlad or Beltran instead of Soriano the two years before we signed Fonzie.
