With Boston losing tonight and the Mets and Yankees missing the playoffs, how will this affect the free agent market? Those AL East teams now will realize that they have to get more talent to compete with the Rays. Included in that, how will it affect resigning some our guys like Wood and Dempster. I know that they want to stay in Chicago, but due to the results of some of the highest spenders, how does everyone think that this will affect us?

I agree that Wood will resign with the Cubs. As for Dempster, I think it will take an overwhelming offer for him to leave the Cubs. I can't see that happening with names like Sabathia, Burnett, Lowe, and Peavy out there.

Agreed. It would take a lot to tear Woody from Chicago, and from the interviews I have heard with Dempster, he seems to feel the same way!

Where the top money teams finish probably has little to do with how much they spend. They will spend regardless of how they did the previous year. Those teams expect to be the playoffs each year.

With that said, I don't think that changes the climate of the free agent market. How it affects the Cubs is really hard to say. I agree with many that Wood will be in Chicago next year. I'm not sure how much of a priority it will be to bring Dempster back.

I think everyone would be in agreement that if Hendry has a way to get Peavy from San Diego, that would be better than resigning Dempster. I seriously doubt that they have the funding to do both. Although, if Peavy is not doable, I can see Chicago getting a slight discount on Dempster compared to what he might get on the market.

I think Kerry is one of those guys, no matter what happens that will always be in a Cubs uniform. He will forever be a Cub.

I have nothing to base this on other than knowing Kerry's love for the Cubs and this city, but I highly doubt we'll see Kerry Wood in anything other than a Cubs uniform next year.

While I believe he will be on the Cubs next year, I'm almost certain at some point in the future he will be in a different uniform. You can count on it.

Fine line between re-sign and resign!

well his value is at an all-time high after throwing for 2nd most innings in his career. We got him for our AAAA junk. Last time he threw this many innings he went 128, 46, and 25 the next 3 years. Just think we may be in for a similar path. If we can get hermida and roberts without trading a vital piece then im all for it. but i thought this would be a way for us not to destroy what little farm system we do have and get real balanced on offense.

we're trading rich harden for brian roberts? lol no thanks

Yes, I agree trading Harden for Roberts---when we already have two qualified 2nd basemen already on the roster---would be very stupid. So unless we can turn around turn DeRosa into Brandon Webb, making a Harden/Roberts trade is useless. Not to mention you can shell a few bucks and sign Orlando Hudson as a FA and it only cost you is a couple of draft picks.

I don't care for Gallagher being referred to as "AAAA junk."
