If I throw a personal attack at you, you'll come back at me guns a blazing.

Lou won't get banned for throwing one at Soriano.

The offense has to have some kind of motivation, and so far, the playoffs doesn't appear to be enough.

Do people really think a lack of motivation is the problem?

Dusty Baker hugs or Lou holding the players accountable?

Dusty Baker hugs have won a playoff game with the Cubs.

Just sayin'

That none of this has anything to do with anything.

This isn't Lou "yelling at the players."

This is Lou stammering and babbling to the press.

Going off on the players TO the players themselves is one thing, but this is just silly.

I've lumped several aspects into "motivation". Pressure from fans, the city, 100 years, being a playoff environment......

I'm fired up for these playoffs. The team looks like they just woke up from a nap.

We're one of the biggest markets in baseball. Just seems to me it's a given the press is involved.

[clearing voice] Hello? [wiping off sweaty face while looking in either direction] Am I still on?. Ok, good.

Just wanted to say that status quo is not working so maybe firing them up will. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but being an enduring masochist for 35 years, it may just lead me to believe that it could work with these players.

Oh well. I hope they at least win on one. Baby steps, ya know.

P.S. I'm really sorry about my rant last night. I hope I get a chance to survive it.

Well if Lou has proven anything its that he knows when to yell and when not. Everytime he has exploded with this team they have responded by winning. Its been Lou's signature all his managing career so I think I'll trust that he is yelling at the right time.

As evidenced by all of his World Series trophies.

When a team wins, they have heart

When a team loses they lack motivation.

That's how it works.

Pretty much.

Freak accident. You best friend is pinned under a car and is going to die if you can't lift it. What do you do?

Get in there and give everything you have to lift that car?

or

Sit back and say sorry dude, there isn't anyway I'm going to lift that car off of you.

Where exactly was this heard? Because if it was just "overheard," it's not likely he said anything to Soriano in English, so the person who may or may not have heard this could have heard wrong and not known what he was hearing. Or it might be someone who knows Spanish.

Or did Lou actually say to the media that he said this to Soriano?

What color is the car?

I think a better analogy is do you sit back and say this sucks, or do you yell at the car to get off of him.

I just think once the playoffs come this team just tenses and they play insanely tight. There's a feeling like they HAVE to win, especially this year and it just looks like they're too scared and maybe trying too hard out there.

Of course, but specifically criticizing the players through the press when you're the manager strikes me as pointless. If you have something to say to the player, say it to the player. Playing the press game just seems redundant.

I think this makes more sense than those who are claiming this team isn't motivated enough or they don't care.

Agreed. I think the claims they look like they don't care or "asleep" out there don't make any sense. They look too stressed and almost oddly terrified of the spot their in.

this really is hitting the nail on the head ya'll

the series last year really was nothing as bad as this year...they just played like pig poop last year...this year though

i mean, the second inning last night!?!?!?!? tight tight tight tight and then a little uptight for good measure...

for game 3, maybe the scoreboard people can help us out and go ahead and give the dodgers an 8 run lead...maybe they will play a little more loose then...

Exactly, there is one thing I've got a pretty strong feeling about - LA better close them out Saturday night. If they allow the Cubs to get one, its going to loosen the Cubs up, they'll play better and LA' will be in for a world of hurt.

Yep, Lilly even said the move to LA might loosen these guys up. 2 postseasons without a win, I think if they get a win they'll all loosen up A LOT. If we get swept out of this postseason as well I can't even imagine how tense this team will be next year..

this is all so stupid. do any of you honestly believe that an entire team of professional athletes, men who have spent their entire lives competing and wanting to win, have suddenly decided, "you know, eff this, let's just pack it up and play golf"?

listen, I know the team has played like Howry the past two days, but let's not pretend the team doesn't care or lacks motivation. they've played two bad baseball games, period. It happens.

Yep, just like last year when we were coming home to Chicago..... :-"

the game that firmly cemented Rich Hill's nickname in the scripture of Cub lore.

Was anyone else hoping Lou was going to throw a monumental fit last night on DeRosa's foul ball that obviously kicked up chalk? I'd like to see his frustrations shown, but maybe to someone other than the team.

And yes I do think it's possible for a team of professional baseball players to lose hope, concentration and drive. I'm a professional in a very competitive field and there are projects/days where I just feel like it doesn't matter what I do. That's a human feeling and these guys are human, despite what we want to believe. A classic Lou meltdown on the field last night may have diverted the attention a bit today from the team and loosened everyone up.
