Could it be Rogers Hornsby? The way the guys standing, and his age, he looks like he could be a Player-Manager. I know Hornsby was just that at one point.

You keep ignoring the obvious.

I don't have any specific ideas, but if I wanted to find out and I had several hours to kill at work and distract myself I would do the following:

1) Search 1927-1932, 1934-1936 Cubs rosters on baseball-reference.com for older players who threw left-handed.

2) Google all returned matches from step (1)

I admit, you are better than I am.

Then why are you smiling?

Because I know something you don't.

What is that?

I...am not left-handed...

Also, labeled roster photos of those teams would help.

Edit: here are a few labeled roster photos from that era:

The socks are confusing though.

I ruled out Caverretta pretty early since he was only 19 years old in 1936 (the last year for those uni's. The guy in that photo is most certainly older than that.

I'm liking the Jakie May likeness.

Yeah, May was about to turn 37 his second year with the Cubs, so that fits the profile too.

Just think, 70 years from now a group of Cubs fans may try to identify a picture of Mark Guthrie.

Also fitting the profile is that he is from the East Coast. Youngsville, NC. Not sure if that fits the vicinity, but it's all flowing together pretty well at this point.

The museum is in Vermont, so we're not all that close to NC. ;) However, if anyone could establish that May liked to fly fish then we'd know for certain we have a winner. But even without that bit of info I'd have to agree that it is indeed looking like Jakie May is our mystery player.

Just keep your fingers crossed for those future Cubs fans that any and all photos of Guthrie are, you know, labeled and stuff.

And then they'll go to another thread and say, "OK, it's been 170 years. Now is the time!"

The year 2080

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/2007/06/26/MDSCJPzq.jpg

I came across a picture of an old Cub. Any ideas?

Rich Harden?

Ryan Dempster?

Greg Maddux?

Mitch Atkins?

Josh Vitters?

Kerry Wood?

Ryne Sandberg?

I thought my grandfather might know, but he became enraged and dropped dead of a heart attack when I showed it to him.
