Cubs playoff games occuring during other obligations. OH NO!

Posted
I almost missed Game 7 of the 2003 NLCS when my dad had to be rushed to the emergency room. My mom and my sister took him. My dad refused to let me go with. He told me to stay at home and send text message updates to my sister so he could keep track of the game.

Is there any question why I am such a Cub fanatic?

Haha, that's awesome.

I haven't read this thread yet, but how about this for a conflict? I'll be on my honeymoon. My impending marriage will have it's first test. :)

In 2003, I missed a few games because of swim practice. I did skip practice for games 6 and 7 of the NLCS though, and would have done the same for the World Series.

Last year, I didn't miss any of the games, but after Chris Young went yard to lead of game 3, I got pissed and didn't bother watching it, watched some college football, then went to the gym. Came back in time to see the end.

This year, nothing short of death will stop me from watching this playoff run. I only work on Friday, every Friday gameday will be a day off

Last year I missed Game 3 for the Mizzou-Nebraska game. I was originally going to watch the Cubs game, but they were ticking me off and I'm happy in the choice I made.

My brother quit 8th grade football in '03 because they had a game the night of Game 6 of the NLCS.

My mom told my wife (then fiancee) that she better not have a kid during a Cubs WS game b/c not only would I not be there, but neither would my mom...

I was on my honeymoon during this year's NBA finals (I'm a Laker fan) and I made a deal with my wife that I wouldn't watch any Cubs games (or pretty much any other sporting event) if she let me watch the three Laker games that were on. We were able to schedule activities (no, not those) in Maui like snorkeling and going on the road to Hana around the Laker games with no problem. Of course, it helped that the games were on at 3 in Hawaii and ended right before we would go to dinner those nights.

I watched most of game 6 but left as the eighth inning was ending since I knew the Cubs weren't going to win. I started to watch Game 7 and was prepared to skip a mandatory physics discussion and lab. But I knew the Cubs were going to lose when Miguel Cabrera homered in the first inning so I left and went to class. I figured if they did end up winning, I'd be home in time for the seventh or eighth inning and could watch the last two and celebrate. Obviously I didn't have to worry about that.

Holy Howry, you're married? Aren't you younger than me?

Jesus, just the thought sends chills down my spine.

I have a weird mind...and during this summer one hypothetical situation I thought of is this...

Cubs are in the World Series this fall. Your wife has an operable brain tumor and needs immediate surgery that will give her a 50% chance of living. The surgery is scheduled to take place during Game 7 of the World Series. Despite being extremely nervous and full of emotion regarding the surgery, you sit in the waiting room watching the game on TV. It's the bottom of the 9th, the Cubs are up 1 run, the bases are loaded and there is 2 outs and a 3-2 count. Suddenly, just as you have begun to give your mind a rest from the worrying and pain of dealing with your situation and have begun to enjoy baseball, the doctor comes out to give you the news on the surgery....do you tell the doctor to hold on a pitch or are you human enough to quickly get your priorities in place and forget about the game?

it's probably one of or the biggest defining moments in your life. you wouldn't care about that pitch. you'll see the replay a million times.

Yep. Got married in May and I'm 23.

This week turned out perfectly for me. I was originally scheduled to work a 5-9 Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. I would've missed games 1 and 3 of the playoffs. However, someone needed me to work for them today and Saturday, so instead of working tomorrow and saturday, I'm working tonight and Saturday morning so I'll be able to watch games 1 and 3 :D

I swear, it's a sign.

I was supposed to have an exam Friday that I would've had to study for all Thursday night, but my professor was like, "how about we just make it a take-home exam due Monday instead and cancel Friday's class?" Maybe he's a Cubs fan at heart.

Any day games during the first round, I'll have to Tivo and watch them when I get home. I won't miss any of the other games. I'm also planning to come to Chicago for the first two games of NLCS if the Cubs get that far.

You driving Vance? I may need to hitch a ride.

I have a couple different obligations from 8-9:30 on Wednesday, so I'm hoping that Game 1 is in hand by the time I have to leave. Game 3 is right in the middle of Mizzou-Nebraska, so I have no idea how I'm going to manage that.

I'm already trying to figure out how to get another TV to put in my room. I was going to watch MU-NU with some friends, but that's not gonna happen now.

Don't know just yet. Right now, I can get a round trip flight out of Monroe for under $250. My guess is that will not be the case by the time I'm ready to plan the trip for certain, but if it is, I'll fly.

There's also a Cubs fan who teaches with me that has friends in Chicago. So, if I drive, she may be going too. Right now, it's all up in the air. I'll also have to score tix to at least one of the games, or I'm not making the trip.

I ran into the same deal. However I'm only letting one person come over and I will dvr the missou/nebraska game. i'm a huskers game and I know how the game is going to turn out so I can wait until sunday morning for that one. Last year I ran both games at the same time and that was to hard to keep up with both

I'm not married, but I'd definitely ditch my girlfriend for anything Cubs related.

She's a Sox fan.

Wow, I'm pretty sure my boyfriend would have dumped me if i was a Sox fan... so I guess good for you for staying with her, but you should try to switch her over to the good side...

ALSO, my boyfriend and I both took off work for some important games and will call in "sick" if we need to.

If I had a brian tumor that had to be removed, I would insist that ElectronBlue keep on top of the game for me.

OH and Nebraska-Mizzou... that was just a bad experience last year. Of course EB made us have both TV's on the games... I really don't want to have to go through that this year. Football just isn't that important.

I asked a professor if we would have an exam next Wednesday the 8th b/c I have tix to Game 5 on the 7th and the trip back from Chicago would be taking place on the 8th. I knew it would be close. I didn't tell him why I was wondering and he said that our exam would be on Friday and then asked why I was so relieved. I told him and then he told me, "You know, I've been thinking we should have it on Wednesday." He's a jerk so I thought he was serious, but when he saw my facial expression he quickly let me know that he was only joking. I was relieved to say the least.
