I realize I am being overly doom and gloom with this comment, but how many more games off the WC lead until we start to get worried? I mean 8 games ago we had an 11 game lead, and now if Philly wins tonight its just 7. I'm still not worried about making the playoffs at this point, but I can no longer feel confident about saying that we are locks for October. Just near locks.

Now everyone call me stupid.

you're not stupid, just irrational after tough losses.

I know I'm being irrational. That's why I'm asking you, no one is worried that we've very quickly knocked off over a third of our lead in a week, and we are going to be playing a really really difficult schedule over the last 19 games?

i am. the 99.whatever% is b.s., just like the cubs being so heavily favored vs the dbacks last post-season was b.s.

the cubs weren't heavily favored against the d-bags. at best they were probably like 60% to win that series, and in reality it was probably about 50/50. this is 99/1. not even close to being similar situations.

Magic number just went down to 16.

Should be 15

actually we shouldn't have won that game against the rockies back in may, so it should be 16.

But we should have won that game vs. St. Louis where Shammy McShammerson blew the save, so back to 15.

It's beyond me how people insist that Ryan Theriot is better than Cedeno at baseball.

I'm just guessing but it's probably because Ryan Theriot has outperformed Ronny Cedeno at the major league level. Just a guess...

If Theriot is just short of terrible, that makes Cedeno what - far short of terrible then? This is not a difficult argument. Ryan Theriot is a below average baseball player - we all know that. However, he is the best shortstop the Cubs have and better than Cedeno.

No, it makes Cedeno a pretty unknown quantity whose floor is Ryan Theriot's ceiling.

wait i can't tell if this is a joke or people actually still believe this.

At what point do we start to ask whose being more irrational, they people who keep saying that the seasons over and the team is melting down, or the people who refuse to entertain the thought that it could happen.

This may have been discussed already, but there is a chance that Hurricane ike could be near Houston next weekend. Could have scheduling problems.

This is all feeling waaaaay too much like 2004.

if you're one of the people in the "who's more irrational" discussion, as a rule of thumb, you should probably just assume that it's you.

But we shouldn't have won that game yesterday because the Cubs are suppose to be losing since it's September. Back to 16.

No, not exactly. I for one am not on the meltdown band wagon, however, I accept the fact that it could be a possibility. There are some out there that refuse it to be possible, because were the best team in the NL, and have the best pythag, and so on. Aside from yesterday, this team looks legitamately bad. Granted, the Brewers dont look much better, but Im sick of accepting a loss because they did as well. The bottom line, is, folks need to drop the irrationality card. Bigger collpases have hapened.

Games against cupcake teams that very much should have been won but weren't? Check.

A three-homer game by a Cub down in Cincinatti? Check.

Hurricane soapdropping up the schedule? Check.

A series at Shea near the end of the season? Check.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

i was wrong, there have been three, since the mets blew it last year.

1951 brooklyn dodgers were a 1-in-384 shot at missing the playoffs.

2007 mets were a 1-in-500 shot at missing the playoffs.

1995 california angels were 1-in-8,336 shot at missing the playoffs.

1964 Phillies and 2007 mets. How about the 1995 Angels?

The 1964 "Phold" is considered the biggest collapse in major league history. Phillies were up like 11 games in mid September and crapped themselves.

What could they possibly do if there's mandatory evacuations in Houston?

Play the series in a neutral park.

The following teams somewhat near Houston are away that weekend:

Texas

Kansas City

Atlanta

Near Chicago:

Milwaukee

Detroit

Cincinnati

After the series the Cubs go home to play Milwaukee (with a day off Monday), and the Astros go play a series in Florida (with a day off Monday), so since the Astros are the "home team" they will probably chose to play the series close their their next series. I would guess Atlanta is a safe pick.

Damn, this team is terrible right now.

Neither the Cubs nor the Brewers look like they want to win the Central right now. They're doing their best to out-suck each other.
