It just looks like a fluff column to excite White Sox fans. You notice he never really goes into why he thinks the White Sox would be bad for the Cubs (I'm sure the reasons he would give would be bad anyway, but he doesn't even try, which shows how little he probably believes in what he's saying). The only real baseball opinion he gives in the article is that the Cubs are the best team. After that he just sort of rambles, gives vague comments about how the Cubs should be fearful of the White Sox, but is careful never to really go beyond that.

When will people realize these columnists write these articles just to get reactions?

Is the reaction he's looking for, "Holy crap, Phil Rogers is a complete imbecile!!"?

Because, if it is, that plus/minus system for rating teams' offseasons was probably successful.

When I saw it I never got to the end so I wasn't sure if he ever actually provided reasoning. I know it's just a "stir the pot" column, but I can't help but check it out. That's part of the reason I didn't post it here.

Columnists in big markets that suck piss me off so much.

What a ton of freedom squandered. You've got all these pro teams in Chicago, there are interesting stories all over. As a columnist you have so much more freedom than a beat writer who has to cover the mundane day-to-day stuff as well as do some free-writing. A columnist can pick an interesting/fun story every day if he wants to.

And instead you get pot-stirring crap like this.

The Angels and perhaps Tampa are going to be the Cubs worst WS nightmare. They seem like they would be a lot harder to beat than the White Sox.

Tampa? Yea, but only because I have nightmares about that series and their rotation scares me.

I wouldn't worry about the Angels much more than I'd worry about any other team, though. I don't think they're as good as people think/their record suggests.

While this article is typical of Phil Rogers' mindless articles, there is, I believe, one miniscule, largely insignificant nugget of truth in there. If the Cubs get to the World Series and lose it, it will suck. If they lose it to the White Sox, it will suck a little more for many Cubs fans.

Yes, I know that several posters here wouldn't care who they lose it to, but many Cubs fans would. The flip side, though, is that beating the White Sox in the World Series would probably add a little sweetness for the same fans.

Which makes it a wash. For those fans who care about bragging rights, the Sox got there first. Beating the Sox for a championship would give those fans the ultimate trump card.

Me, I couldn't care less about any of it, outside of maybe when I'm at a Cubs/Sox games and surrounded by some of their fans.

Yeah, I'm not sure it would make too much difference to me, except in those instances when Sox fans would gloat. I imagine for fans in Chicago, being in the midst of the World Series celebration of the team who just beat yours would be difficult.

Good points. Brings a VERY HYPOTHETICAL Q to mind. As a cubs fan, what would you prefer:

Option 1- Cubs lose a hard fought series in the NLCS to either the Mets or the Phillies (say a well played 7 games).

Option 2- Cubs win the NLCS and make it to the world series, but are swept by the White Sox.

derosa confirmed that it would be a lot of pressure

It would be a lot of pressure vs. anybody, though. The reason he gave was that it has been 100 years and they just won one.

Any of the teams we'd potentially face in the WS would have a fairly recent championship under their belts, except the Rays, obviously. If the Twins made it, them too, but it's only been like 20 years or so for them.

Not that I buy into any of it.

Option 2. Without even thinking twice about it.

Make it to the World Series and lose.

The Cubs are the best team in the NL (and possibly baseball) and nothing less than the World Series is going to make me happy.
