I've been very surprised that they're willing to move on this during the season, but here it is. The Cubs are part of only 3 series that start on Thursday, so it's possible that they could end up being the test case for the system.

Note: This only starts Thursday for teams who are starting their series. Teams that are playing on Thursday as the final game of their series won't have replay until they start their next series on Friday.

Got a feeling since the Saturday game is national, the Cubs/Phillies series is certain to have plenty of mention of the instant replay.

Fortunately, Wrigley isn't a very necessary replay stadium with the baskets.

It is strange how they sort of sandbagged on it for years and then all of a sudden they flip the switch and it's gung-ho to get it in without even an offseason in between.

I'm for it, but I'm also sort of curious about the way it is being done.

one of the rare times I didn't admire one of my shots was the one time it wasn't counted as a home run. right when I hit the ball, I knew it was long gone as did everyone on the field so nobody watched it. the ump looked to our dugout to get a new ball. well, the ball cleared the fence about 40 feet high, hit a tree and bounced back into left field. the left fielder (playing in only his 2nd game ever) picked it up and fired it in and since nobody saw it leave assumed it didn't. I was left standing on 2nd with a double. after the game, the opposing pitcher was laughing about it and told me that had to be the farthest hit ball he'd ever given up and didn't even turn his head after it left my bat because he knew it was gone. the left fielder then admitted the ball hit the top of the tree and landed right by his feet so he assumed it was still in play. we won by about 15 so I didn't mind too much, but I missed having my 1st 3-homer game.

the moral to my story is twofold: they should have replay in Iowa City rec-league softball, and you should always stand there to admire your shots when you know you got it all

They are guna screw this up.

Baseball is so far behind football in terms of adapting the rules of the game to meet the changing technologies.

It would be just like Grandpa Bud to drop the ball on the instant replay, causing the Cubs to lose a game in the WS or something. Or maybe the screw up would be in our favor and that would be how we win, and that becomes the story.

Idk, I don't like the 'in the middle of the season' part of this.

I just don't understand why they're limiting it to HR calls? Why not safe/out calls? Why limit it to only ensuring that SOME calls are right?

IMO, it's far more necessary for safe/out stuff than for the HR stuff anyway. Same goes for fair/foul in play calls.

I don't really buy the slowing down of the game argument, either. We've all seen the managers go out there and it probably takes just about as long, if not longer, for those interruptions to happen.

Really??

NFL Replay is horrible.

The worst part about the MLB replay plan is that they're copying the NFL style of having the ump on the field review his own call.

The HR calls are usually pretty black and white once you see the tape. And I know that several others plays are too, but you have to draw the line somewhere. What would become a questionable call would greatly expand and there would be far more replays than lengthy arguments.

I'm fine with this.

That is probably not the worst part about MLB replay that I can see at this point, since it hasn't been used. I would put starting in the middle of the season and limiting the amount of oversight allowed (i.e. not using it at plays at home/first) ahead of that.

And I wasn't trying to say the NFL has a good replay system, I was just saying that it's 2008 at mid-year, and baseball in putting in replay.

The NFL instituted replay on a limited basis (sort of the same thing we are doing here) on March 11, 1986, during an off season.

12 years later, the game that calls itself America's past time is figuring out that it might have a use for technological advances that are occurring. That's all I am pointing out.

I agree with you on principle, but I think its limited to homeruns because that's basically the only play where the umps are not right on top of the play.

Leave it up to the teams to decide when to challenge. Or simply have an ump watching the replays on EVERY play and correcting the calls that are obviously wrong from a booth.

If you can pull that off, great... then why not make an automated rulebook strike zone too?

So, what happens when a homerun with men on base actually turns out to be in play?

Have they written down rules regarding this or are they just going to leave it to umpires discretion?

Good question. Ground rule double, I would assume.

Posted
I can see situations where the ground rule double would be unfair to the team on offense. Those hits could be triples or could have scored runners from first.

Welcome to replay, lol.

I would assume that umpires are instructed to rule a ball in play whenever possible, and go to replay afterwards.

I loved how Len or Bob (I forget which) explained that managers wouldn't be allowed to argue the decision determined by Instant Replay. I was just waiting for the other to say, "but you know it will."

I'll guarantee you that on the first overturned call on IR, you'll see the manager out there before the call is even made.

Also, Cubs-Phillies, first night game at Wrigley, and first ever game with Instant Replay.

I believe it's written into the rules that it's an auto ejection.
