It is amazing what "people in the know" can write with a straight face.

From John Perotto (baseball Prospectus) via MLBtraderumors:

Despite a great season, the Cubs may be hesistant to re-sign Ryan Dempster to a long-term deal because they already have Rich Harden, Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, and Jason Marquis signed for 2009.

Let me get this straight, the Cubs might think twice about re-signing Ryan Dempster because we have Jason Marquis under contract for 2009.

it's not that far-fetched to think that if the team cannot move Marquis that it may not be able to afford Dempster, factoring in all of the raises to other players (including Marquis) and uncertainty regarding where the payroll is going to be next year. he's going to be getting a healthy raise from somebody

Unfortunately, it's true. Sometimes you don't want 5 high contract starters on a staff. The fact that the Cubs have 4 of them might influence them to not want another one.

Now, I happen to think the Cubs are going to work through that and sign Dempster anyway because of their great relationship, and they'll do their best to trade Marquis to make that not as much of a concern. But the fact that they have 4 starters signed already and a couple of starters waiting in the wings is a very valid reason why they'd be hesitant to sign another one.

The Cubs already owe massive amounts in backloaded deals, what's to keep them from offering Ryan a 3-4 year deal with a lower first year and a big raise in subsequent years, after Marquis is off the books. Not that they won't try to get Marquis off the payroll this offseason. Especially since they'd probably much rather have Demp in the rotation in the future and not Marquis.

BTW , I'm not saying that's what they should do, just something I could see them doing.

I think it's hillarious that we signed Marquis in the first place.

Or maybe it's more sad than funny.

depends on your point of view. Im sure bird fans are rolling.

I agree with you that the Cubs will re-sign Dempster somehow, but I still think it's hilarious to think the Cubs would let the year-long ace of the rotation leave because they have one year left on their #5 starter. That would make for a real public relations disaster for the new owner after Dempster leads the Cubs to a WS championship. Dempster has already stated he wants to stay with the Cubs and to me that translates into something will be worked out. If Marshall continues to improve, trading Lilly (and Marquis) could be a possibility if money really is an issue.

the current regime signed all those backloaded deals because they knew that the team was going to be sold, so it was going to be someone elses problem

I can understand WHY we got Marquis.

I will never understand what they were thinking when they gave him that contract. The Cubs are a better team with Marshall in the rotation, IMO.

Can we renegotiate Marquis contract to a half a year each year. You know after the all-star break he goes back to St Louise with his 6-0 record then finishes the season 8-16 with them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dempster agrees to a contract with a lower salary next year followed by a higher salary after that once Marquis' contract has expired. He wants to stay with the Cubs and he seems to me like someons who would do what it takes (within reason) to be able to stay.

I have no doubt it'll be backloaded, just like everyone else...
