Reds released catcher David Ross.

Ross was designated for assignment last week after hitting .231/.381/.366 in 173 plate appearances. He's a career .223 hitter, but that also comes with an average of 27 homers per 500 at-bats and Ross has reportedly already drawn interest from the Phillies.

I guess Dusty thinks Paul Bako is more valuable.

i'd be happy since he hit two homers in a game against us, and we're playing the reds now, but i know that whoever is catching for them is going to hit our pitchers.

but seriously, this is dumb. ross is actually pretty good if you're using him as a backup catcher, and a lot more worthwhile than paul bako. guess jocketty didn't want dusty to lose one of his toys.

i'd expect ross to find another employer very quickly.

I'd like to pick him up if we could get him in the minors til September, then go with him as the backup next year. Sorry Koyie.

Isn't Blanco signed through next year? Or is this his last year?

2 year deal signed before '07. I brought much rage for not handing the job to Geo. Probably worked out for the best.

I would like that. The backup job is Koyie's to lose next year.

Isn't Ross actually younger than Kyie Hill?

I think it's far more likely that Hank is back than Koyie Hill is the #2 catcher next season.

I think the 2nd year is a mutual option.

Well it's the 3rd year, but yeah Cot's has him as having some sort of option.

EDIT: Checked, you were right it's mutual.

They still have Corey Patterson on the team. This can't be any more dumb than that is.

I personally think the Cubs will exercise Blanco's option if he decides to come back. He's a "veteran" who is having a good year heading into his option/buyout. I think the Cubs will see it as the safe option to bring him back for one more year.

I'm hoping Hank retires.

Why? He's a backup catcher...what's wrong with him in that role?

Because he's ancient, isn't likely to replicate his #s from this year, and will cost too much.
