This has made a big stir in LA and everyone is pissed at Jeff Kent for saying anything remotely negative about Vin. Vin is to LA fans what Steve Stone wishes he could be.

The Annoying TJ Simers[/url]"]He's been cantankerous all week -- like that's different than any other week, but he's really been Jeff Kent ornery and then some -- peeved at anyone who might suggest he's doing better because Manny Ramirez is hitting behind him in the lineup.

It's obvious, though, everyone noticing it, Kent going into Saturday night's game hitting .500 behind Ramirez, Vin Scully mentioning it during each broadcast.

"Vin Scully talks too much," Kent said.

Now that's funny, the guy who normally doesn't say much, this time saying way too much.

"You can't say that," I told Kent, and he said he had just spoken to 200 women (at a Dodgers function) "and I told them the same thing, and they laughed.

"We all love you, Vin," Kent added with a mischievous grin, "but you still talk too much."

Ran that by Scully. He had nothing to say.

NEXT WEEK, I presume, Kent will go after the Pope.

It'll be fun to hear Jeff Kent booed as badly as Andruw Jones has this season.

I wish somebody would go after Simers next.

With their car.

Take Plaschke out at the same time.

Aside from the Scully comment (and it came across to me like he was joking), Kent's got a point about small sample sizes and the notion of 'protection'.

Yes, Vin Scully is a legend, but sadly, I think his time has run the course.

Why would you say that? If nothing else is on, I'll put on the Dodgers game on Extra Innings just to listen to Vin. His voice is just so... baseball.

I miss the days when Vin would do national broadcasts. he's easily one of my all-time favorites.

I think he's terribly overrated. It could be because I don't like the one man gig though.

^I agree with you. Scully is fantastic but the one voice does get old. Maybe it's just because my whole life I've been used to hearing a PBP and a color guy.

Overall, regardless of whether "protection" is a myth, Kent didn't need to be a jerk about it. I tended to take his side in the Bonds-Kent thing because I hate Bonds, but now I think I just hate Kent a little less.

Actually, Vin never mentioned "protection" though I'm sure that's what he was implying when he said that Kent had been hitting better in front of Manny.

Whether or not protection is legit or false what Vin said was 100% true. Jeff Kent has hit much better with Manny in the lineup. Maybe is it just a coincidence, but it has happened. Jeff Kent is a moron, and for some reason felt the need to take it offensive. Kent is just pissed that throughout his entire career he has put up great numbers, but still no one gives a damn about him. Everyone tries to blame Bonds for that whole fiasco in San Francisco, but honestly I bet it was Kent's fault. He seems to be a jealous player. Jealous of Bonds then, and jealous of Manny now.

Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola (sp?) were great on the NBC game of the week. As were Bob Costas and the other guy that he did games with back in the 80s. In many ways those 2 teams really ruined all other announcers for me.

I normally don't like one-man gigs because very, very few announcers can keep the broadcast interesting doing it that way. Vin Scully is one of those extreme few who can pull off a one-man gig very well.

I'd listen to more Smokies games on the radio, but I can't stand listening to only Mick Gillespie. Nothing against him as I think he's a pretty good announcer, but he shouldn't be in a one-man booth.

Pat Hughes credits his radio abilities to the fact that he did years of broadcasting in the minor leagues with no color man. When you have to fill 3 hours of airtime on your own, I think it makes you a better pbp guy

I agree. You definitely get lots of practice.

this is probably when he decided to talk about the players' strapping bodies with their white pinstriped pants and their blue alternate jerseys, with blue belts, blue helmets, and blue shoes.

I thought Pat still did a one man booth, with some guy in the background who occasionally says "yeah..."

i think you're right, although there is the occasional "ah jeez" or "gee whiz"

Thanks, that was bothering me. My memory of Kubek was that he was pretty understated and didn't spout a lot of the crap that bothers me so much today. Of course it could be that I didn't know any better back then. I really wish ESPN classic would show the Sandberg game so I could here some Costas when he was still humble.
