Anyone else like this maybe to try for a few games. Kosuke's been so brutal lately and both Reed and Edmonds have been on fire with the bat - why not try to put them both in the lineup?

I know someone will bring up "Reed can't hit RHP", but I don't think he would be any more of a liability in the lineup right now than what Fukudome's giving us.

Thoughts?

Reed vs. righties this season(not including today) is at .268 .313 .392, pretty much right in line with where he's been all career.

I'm fairly confident Kosuke can outproduce that.

Kosuke has been hitting the ball much better the last couple games. There were a few hard hit outs to go with 5-17 and 2 walks the last four games.

I agree, I think Kosuke is about to bust out of it. He has been much improved at the plate the last few days, and has been making some hard line drive outs instead of looking totally lost.

we have one of the productive platoons in the game in cf, and now we want to break it up because we look at reed's numbers against lefties and assume they'll be the same against righties?

bad, bad idea.

reed has been so good at the plate because he has been used correctly.

I agree. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I think Kosuke and Lee are going to pick it up and hopefully carry this team through the stretch of road games in September. He's a professional and I think he'll get it done.

it's like a crazy person going on meds and getting well, and then feeling so well that they forgot why they took the damn pills in the first place and going off of them.

Until I saw the date of the first post, i thought maybe this was a week old thread coming back. Then, things looked bad enough with Fukudome that almost anything was worth proposing. But, clearly, in the last week there is some hope -- to derail that and take away Reed Johnson's role against lefties would be silly. If a lefty reliever is brought, this alignment says Edmonds hits.

Now, the Cubs still could use a RH bat to PH, play DH against lefties in late October if all goes well, and if that guy can also play corner of, well then Piniella has one more option. Fukudome against lefties has looked horrible at times. On July 31, when rosters are about the expand, they can play DH games, etc. I'd love to add a platoon option to Fukudome. I think it should be Jay Payton -- though the idea of Jay Payton as DH against Liriano is scary.

Reed Johnson EQA, mostly in a platoon against lefties that emphasizes his strengths: .273

Kosuke Fukudome EQA, "worthless player": .268

League average EQA: .260

Idea: Let the two Cub offensive players that are struggling below PECOTA projections work their way out of their slumps while the Cubs continue to score 10% more runs than anyone else in the league.

He'd be more of a liability than what we are likely to get from Fukudome from here on out, not even including defense.

Reed's defense is every bit as good as Fukudome.

I can't think of a proper way to say that this is not true at all.

Agreed. Not only that, but Kosuke's range is pretty incredible. He cuts down the RCF gap significantly and gets to balls he has no business catching.

You guys are forgetting that Reed made that one diving catch in the LCF gap where his hat bill flipped up. That trumps anything Fukudome has ever done and could ever do. Ergo, ipso facto, Reed is the man...defensively speaking, per se.

Kosuke is better against LHP than Edmonds is and better against RHP than Johnson is. So either way this would be a bad idea.

Nail meet head. Reed is being used exactly as he should be and Fuku overall play merits a starting job. Johnson is OK as a defensive outfielder but cannot carry Fuku jock in right field.
