I'll be there tomorrow, sitting 8 rows from the field between the cubs dugout and homeplate!! :yahoo:

I'll have those same seats for Sunday...Although they 6 rows up.

:triplemiddlefinger:

Haha you have to watch the Nationals!

Too bad the stupid WWE had the Cub fan and current "World Heavyweight Champ" and Chicago native CM Punk lose the main event. I would have fought the WWE---if I was CM Punk---aout jobbing in my hometown......but all welll.......

What Kosuke must think of what the American players do for fun on the offdays...

Perhaps the possibility of pushing Cincy almost 25 games back would be some motivation.

I'm reaching.

Just win, you idiots.

This is completely random and unimportant, but something that I just noticed is that Harden was a 17th round draft pick. What exactly were teams missing for those first 16 rounds? I know this is hindsight, but still...I would have expected that he'd be a bit higher up than that.

Same thing teams were missing when they kept passing on Pujols and hundreds of others.

Oh, I know it happens all the time, I was wondering if there was something specific that turned scouts off about him that he improved on, or if it was just a case where he actually came out of nowhere.

He was a DFE JuCo guy (in the US) and a Canadian pitcher. Often times, young pitchers add velocity as they fill in and get older (and improve their secondary stuff) - they're nowhere near as good as they were when they were drafted at age 18 or 19. This is likely the case with Harden, especially since he was a draft and follow and a Canadian high school kid where HS coaching might not have been as good.

Talking out of my ass here, but I'm guessing his being a Canadian product affected teams' abilities to project him.

He probably didn't come out of nowhere since he was drafted in the 38th round out of HS. His stuff and ability to pitch probably improved like a lot of pitchers do at that age as they grow.

Especially the fact that it was the 2000 draft, which was notoriously bad. Aside from #1 pick Adrien Gonzalez, Adam Wainwright whao was like #28 or 29 was the only player in the 1st round of that draft whose made any kind of major league impact. IE Luis Montanez.

kinda true but kinda not. i don't think that most canadian high schools have baseball, so guys up there don't get to play a whole lot outside of summer leagues. according to an old BA handbook i have, he played mostly outfield in his summer league, but the mariners saw him pitch a couple of times and took a flier on him in the late rounds. he went to juco and played one year, then the a's drafted him in the 17th round. he went back to school his soph year and led all juco pitchers nationwide in strikeouts. the a's signed him as a draft and follow after his soph year, probably to a fairly good (better than normal 17th round certainly) bonus.

Thanks, so we have positional convert, (possibly) inferior Canadian coaching in high school, and the general filling in and growing that happens when an athlete is 18-19 all leading to him improving rapidly between entering JuCo in Arizona and the end of his sophomore year. Not a surprise that he fell to 38 and 17 and not a surprise he had such quick success after a while.

yeah, i would guess that if he were a u.s. player and were pitching all through high school, he probably would've started showing that ability a lot earlier, and probably would've been a high draft pick right out of high school.
