"This has been as exciting as it gets, but it's not over," center fielder Jim Edmonds said. "If we go [to the postseason] and don't advance through the first round, than it doesn't mean anything. This is just the first step in the season, when you're expected to play well and win."

I know that Soriano was on the Yanks, and D-Lee won the WS with the Marlins and all, but it seems like it's gonna be a great thing to have this kind of attitude on the team...where the "playoffs are the real season" kind of attitude. Maybe it doesn't mean much, but it was refreshing to read this morning.

Let's hope that this is a new trend....an expectation to make the playoffs on a regular basis.

I have no idea what that feeling is like, because I've never experienced it. But it sounds awesome.

I thought the exact same thing when I read the paper this morning. Edmonds is a born winner (as he showed us with the Cards), and is going to help the team stay focused and win down the stretch. What a great presense to have in the clubhouse this time of year.

IMO, some of the Cub hitters seemed to press last year in the playoffs and I think that Edmonds will help them relax this time around.

Yeah. Last year they were in full swing at anything mode in the playoffs. I expect better this year.

i had a dream that the cubs had an off day and that the cardinals asked him to play for them on that day and he did.

Kind of like when one of your buddies asks you to play for his softball team, eh?

i don't see how that's possible.

hopefully they just do better because they will have more experience (if, in fact, they were pressing in '07).

Is Edmonds gonna get a one-year deal from us?

If he helps us win a World Series give him a lifetime deal with a player option.

*vomits* Sorry, I am still conditioned to hate seeing comments like that from his Cardinals days, whether they are true or not (and I'm not saying the statement is/isn't correct)

Depending on the players, it sometimes is nice being with a guy that's been there. I'm not saying all the time but sometimes a player just helps guys relax and says something that they understand or pertains to them that a coach/manager can't or doesn't say.

eh, i don't think i buy into that theory at all. i'm just glad he's been so productive.

As am I. I don't think it's an absolute by any means but depending on the guy and team I think it does have an impact from time to time.

What? No one thinks he's a poor excuse for a human being because he only wants to advance past the first round?

For shame!

Where's that green text button?

I buy into it. I agree with CCF69.

I can give various examples from all aspects of life, but being surrounded by people who are calm and cool definitely influences your own ability to manage emotions. This goes for everything in life from sports, to crisis situations, to family conflicts. It's just human nature.

so if it's the 9th inning of game 7th of the nlcs and soriano's up with the bases loaded (but really nervous), he's going to think about how edmonds was just totally relaxing listening to tunes before the game and he'll feel better? come on.

Yea dude, that's what I said.

Can you just deal with the fact that someone has an opinion different than your own on something that none of us can actually prove?

I have no problem with an Edmonds/Johnson combo with Felix coming up when appropriate.

Soriano had been there before. Lee had been there before. Aramis had been there before. Others, too.

I know Banedon acknowledged this in the first post. I'm just pointing out that if they were, in fact, pressing last year, then the very people who some people seem to expect to be calmed down somehow by a guy that's been there before had already been there before themselves and weren't calmed by their own experience.

Sori 225/279 slug 319

Lee 226/289 slug 298

Ramirez 196/308 slug 464

Edmonds 277/365 slug 523

One has been there and did well while the others have struggled in post season play. Again, does this mean Edmonds will lead them to victory because of these numbers...maybe, maybe not. But, He may be a calming influence on these players and add a tip or two that they may be able to implement have have a little more success.

Yeah, and I admit, I don't know how "spreadable" this attitude is. I just think it's good to see from at least this guy. I have a feeling Dempster will do well in the playoffs too. Both Edmonds and Dempster have the right amount of cocky confidence right now that I want to see. Soriano has a little too much. Derrek Lee does seem to have enough.

Anyway, I know this is all mythical magical stuff with no "attitude" or "chemistry" metrics to back it up. Really the point of the thread was that Edmonds was expressing a method of how he goes about his business that I liked, and would like to see more of from others.
