8 pages? Seriously? I haven't read the thread, but if there are 8 pages worth of baseball pet peeves, you guys need to chill out. It's a great game. Stop getting so worked up over it!

maybe one should read the thread before complaining about people complaining.

Question, without stating my opinion regarding W/L as a stat - How effective was Kevin Tapani as a pitcher in 1998?

Answer: Not very.

Question: Which of Tapani's 19 wins would you say " don't matter " ?

That's not the point. It never has been. Nobody is saying wins don't matter. Of course they do.

Just that W-L is not an accurate stat for judging the worth of pitchers.

I agree that it is not all that useful. Tapani's 98 season always stuck out to me as one the bucked the trend. It was not always run support that won him games. I haven't done this, and I was just throwing it out there, but take a look at the leverage index across game logs from that year. I'm guessing you'll see a huge variation in leverage across the season which, to me, lends itself to a disproportionate win total. But in my mind (and I'm probably guilty of selective memory) he was very effective in winning games that year.

I agree with the first. Did you mean to type the second as is? I don't know anyone who thinks someone is ignorant about baseball because they played the game.

I scanned through it pretty quickly and saw lots of pet peeves... am I missing something?

I think there are posters here that are even quicker to jump on something that someone actually associated with baseball says, writes, or types, just because they are associated with the game. Even FJM does this on occasion.

Admiring balls you hit. When you hit the ball, just start running, please.

You know baseball history pretty well OMC....who was the first player (One that made it a habit) to do this?

I've seen so much old footage of ballplayers and the earliest that I've ever seen someone do that is with Eddie Murray:

Cool footage OMC...thanks! Didn't Reggie Jackson do it as well?

but in the same sense...sacrifice bunts also irritate me.

Even when laid down by the pitcher, or by a lousy hitter in the 9th inning when you only need 1 run to win?

No. I figured someone would ask me about that or the stolen base thing. It's not so much that I dislike the sac bunt or a stolen base, but it's how it has transformed with players or managers. Nothing drives me crazier than when the leadoff man gets on, and the next guy tries to sac bunt him over. It's even more crazy seeing this in the first inning of games. Just like a runner trying to steal in front of the heart of the lineup.

Obviously there are good times to do these things, but you rarely see that any more.

The Sultan of Swat used to admire his homeruns all the time.

bolded comments gave me impression he wouldn't really appreciate them, legitimacy aside

I don't know about "all the time" (wouldn't surprise me if he did, I just haven't seen it or read about it personally), but I did just remember the shot of him hitting his 60th HR in 1927 in which he seems to be doing the "walking jog" admiration.

certainly if that person is touted (by himself or others) as having some particular knowledge about the game. Otherwise, I cannot ever recall reading such things here or at fjm.

I have some more...

-- Ever-changing umpire strike zones. It's not "creative" to have 10 guys with 10 different zones. It should be one set zone set by MLB, and the umpires should enforce it. And if they don't, then MLB should find someone who will.

--Ever changing strike zones depending on who the pitcher is. I'm so tired of hearing commentators tell me "he hasn't earned that strike out there yet." Really? So a future HOF'er can throw it 5 inches off the outside and it's ok that it's called a strike, yet a journeyman pitcher or a rookie can throw the exact same pitch and it's a ball? That's crap. That's like how like Michael Jordan could have elbowed someone in the face driving to the lane and not get called with a foul, but if anyone else did it, it would get called by every ref in the league.

-- The "instant replay will mess with the purity of the game" argument. So, you'd rather have a possible incorrect outcome, just because that's "the way it's always been" rather than having a system in place that insures a correct outcome? Would you be so in favor of it if the Cubs were on the bad end of a blown call late in a playoff game, or in the division race? Just because that's the way it's always been doesn't mean that's the way it always has to be.
