The thing that I hate about DH's is that, unless it's followed by an off day, it just kills your bullpen for a few days.

Not if the starters pitch well and go deep into games.

Jason Marquis...

not happening

Add in that they've been treating Harden a little fragile, so the bullpen could def be an issue. At least they're all rested.

I have no problem with how they have pitched Harden, though. The real value he brings to this team starts in October, and if he is over-pitched in the regular season, that would be a bad thing.

You might as well walk Chipper Jones..He's 4-6 lifetime vs. Marquis with 3 HR's..I have a feeling he will be teeing off Marquis again today

I would not be opposed to IBB's in key situations, although I've noticed Dusty and Lou have been opposed to that kind of thinking. It's partially why Pudge slaughtered us in the NLCS.

The same Jason Marquis who has pitched atleast 6 innings in 9 of his last 10 starts. Rightt..

And has only gone over 100 pitches 3 of those 10

Doesnt Marquis have an absolutely dreadful history vs. the Braves?

Most of the current Braves have very little history against Marquis. Andruw Jones killed him, but he's moved on. Chipper has hit 3 home runs against him in only 6 at-bats. Overall though, there's no real idea if this Braves squad is a bad matchup for him.

every matchup is a bad matchup with marquis

That's not really true. Let's give Marquis credit for the good starts he's had. He's not a 65 ERA+ pitcher this year. He's a 95 ERA+ pitcher, which isn't really all that horrible for a #5. The Braves are no juggernaut this year, it's nothing like facing them when they were a playoff team.

The other thing is, he's been holding pretty steady through the year. Putting up some bad starts, then some mediocre ones, with a smattering of good starts. We're in mid August now, which is usually well past the time when Jason collapses. Hasn't happened yet. Let's hope it continues.

I agree with what you're saying. I take issue with the bolded part though. It's much better than "not all that horrible." For a number five starter, it's actually pretty great.

it's not so great for a guy making $7 mil.

Honest question... what would you expect for a guy making 7M? I don't know what the average salary is for MLB SP's this year... I do know that it was just under 5M in 2006. Obviously that number has gone up. How significantly? That I don't know. What we do know is that Marquis is around average, production wise. And he appears to be around average when you consider his salary as well.

I'd pitch Pudge more out of the zone though. Jones has a good idea of the strike zone and is a heck of a student of the game. A friend of mine was talking to him before a game and Chipper told him exactly what the opposing pitcher was going to throw in 3 or 4 different situations and was 100% correct as the game unfolded.

It sucks that we have to face these guys with Chipper and McCann? Weren't they both out when the Braves played St. Louis and Milwaukee?

Who starts Sunday?

Could be Marquis; could be Marshall, could be...Samardzija:

So will they push everyone back a day, or skip Marquis and start everyone else on regular rest?

Lilly tomorrow. Zambrano, Dempster and one of the three mentioned above Sunday.

I'm guessing it depends on the number of pitches Marquis throws today.

From Harden to Marquis. Thanks rain.

Harden goes in the night game.

But won't be able to make his scheduled start on Sunday now.

In the short-term, it's unfortunate. Taking the long view, though, Hendry said shortly after the trade that they'd give Harden an extra day here and there, or even skip a start or two, to keep him healthy the rest of the way. This effectively does that, so even with as well as he's pitched for us to date, I'm more OK with this after thinking about it.

That Braves lineup looks a crapload better than what they were putting out there vs. Milwaukee a couple weeks back.

Here is the lineup for the Saturday game vs. Milwaukee

I not saying it is bad. What I was trying to say from my first quote in the post was that with Marquis and Harden going today, the odds that BOTH go deep AND pitch well isn't likely at all.

I didn't mean to imply that they've been wrongfully treating him as fragile - he is, and I also have no problem with how he has been used thus far. Just observing it as it pertains to the short-term bullpen situation.

Fortunately for the Cubs, they are not in the position where Harden has to be used like CC Sabathia for the team to keep pace. This team is deep enough at SP to not be troubled by long breaks for Harden. So I agree. That's something I find strange about the Brewers use of Sabathia and Sheets, I mean they are securely in the Wild Card spot but are playing with desperation and burning out their pitchers. Or maybe that's a symptom of their bad bullpen?

I think it's because they have a big-time "win now" mentality, knowing that neither Sabathia or Sheets will be in that rotation next year and they may struggle.

Marquis stinks against the Braves (and most of the rest of the league), and Morton stinks at home. One's gotta give, or we have a Boston-style shootout.
