Assuming the Cubs get into the playoffs (and hopefully much farther), I would think Hendry would certainly be the favorite for Executive of the Year Award. Adding Fukudome, Johnson, Edmunds, Gaudin, and Harden to an already-solid team should put him over the top.

i actually made a thread praising hendry for turning the cubs around after their piss-poor 2006, but i'd have to give it to andrew friedman. he's always been heavily involved with player development, which is how the devil rays built the very good team that they have now, and he's done it with a small payroll.

they dont give out separate nl and al awards for exec? surprised

I don't think they do, I could be wrong though.

If so, Hendry is the obvious choice in the NL and deserves it.

Can you really give it to Friedman, when its Executive of the year? Hes done a good job drafting players in the past, but its not like hes went out and made major moves or anything this year. Just throwing that out there

he traded delmon young, who's been mediocre, for matt garza, who has been good and filled a big need (starting pitching). they signed carlos pena off the scrap heap last year, stole dioner navarro from the dodgers in 2006, shored up the bullpen with a few guys, and picked up some nice role players like gabe gross. it really shouldn't be an award based on what you did last offseason, but what you did to build the team on the field in 2008.

it's just MLB - voted on by two execs from each organization in the game. last year mark shapiro won it; the year before it was terry ryan.

Yea he has made more moves than I remembered I guess. Guess you could argue for both

Garza was the only one of those that happened in the last year. Hendry has done much more in the past year to improve his team. It's like Kendall and Trachsel got the awful out of his system, cause everything since then has been golden, with the possible exception of Kosuke(but that's nitpicking).

yes but again, it's not (or at least it should not be) an award that rewards a general manager for the moves he's made in the past year. that would basically result in organizations with very good player development not being rewarded, and instead you'd be rewarding organizations with a lot of holes in their player development, forcing the general manager to go out and spend more money to acquire players.

and really, what has hendry since the end of last season? soto, fontenot and samardzija don't count; they're player development. spent $12M a year on an outfielder who's OPS'ing below .800, sign a platoon CF that's been productive and acquire a very good starter and versatile reliever. so a few really good moves, but mostly this is the same team as last year.

I guess you're one of those Hendry bashers. Signing Fukudome solidified RF, Edmunds/Johnson (both cheap pickups) platoon has been phenomenal, acquired a great (not very good) starter, and a versatile reliever is more than most GMs do in 2-3 years. As for the same team as last year, they have 2 different starters (40% of the rotation), 2 different starting OFs (67% change), a different closer, and much more depth. Doesn't sound like the same team to me.

From June 17th.........

i could buy that he's better than half, but not top 25%. i can think of a bunch of guys off the top of my head who i definitely think are better than hendry:

pat gillick, phillies

walt jocketty, cincy

doug melvin, milwaukee

kevin towers, s.d.

theo epstein, boston

brian cashman, ny yankees

andrew friedman, tampa

mark shapiro, cleveland

dave dombrowski, detroit

billy beane, oakland

but i'd definitely prefer hendry over:

jim bowden, washington

ed wade, houston

ned colletti, l.a. dodgers

brian sabean, san francisco

jon daniels, texas

there are a whole bunch of guys who really can't be judged fairly at this point:

frank wren, atlanta

michael hill, florida

neal huntington, pittsburgh

john mozeliak, st. louis

mike flanagan, baltimore

bill smith, minnesota

tony reagins, l.a. angels

whoever the new guy in seattle will be

i guess i'd put hendry in a group with omar minaya, dan o'dowd and kenny williams. pretty good resources and fairly mixed results.

I don't think there's any doubt that if the Cubs go anywhere in the playoffs, it will be Hendry.

Playing devil's advocate here, what if the Rays get to/or win the World Series?

Does this award count the postseason? Shapiro won it over Kenny Williams in 2005.

If it's like other awards, no. Most awards are voted on before the postseason even they aren't announced until after.

In the Rule 5 Draft last December, we wanted Tim Lahay really bad, so bad we got Tampa Bay to take him for us, and then made a trade with them to get him. Why did we not just take Josh Hamilton instead? Anyone check out his numbers this year in Texas? What if Hendry had taken Josh Hamilton and put him in RF last December. I know there would have been some outcries at the time, but none now. We could have had Hamilton and saved the $40 million spent on Fukudome.

So while I love Jim Hendry and believe he has done a good job, I have a hard time voting for him as the Exec of the Year. Now if we had Hamilton and his numbers in RF, I would vote for Jim right now.

Ummmmm, this is wrong on numerous levels.

I think he's completely unaware that the Reds got Hamilton two years ago in the Rule 5 (c/o the Cubs, of course) and began his comeback with Cincy.

There is not a chance in hell that he was unprotected for the 07 Rule 5 draft, and he was just a wash out failed prospect who hadn't played more than like 10 games in god knows how long when the Reds "took" him.
