The Nationals released Lopez.

Link.

He's been pretty bad this year and wasn't great last year, but at one time he could hit. He could be washed up, but he's a middle infielder with a little power and speed.

I wonder if we could get him on a minor league contract, call him up in September, and milk a hot streak out of him.

My first reaction was "why do we need another middle infielder." Then I looked at his stats for the last 2 years. I can't type all the expletives that I added to my initial reaction. What's the point of wasting money on Felipe Lopez. The worst part about adding him would be that Lou might actually play him.

I think you still have a Dusty hangover.

Is he enough of an upgrade to give up Ronny Cedeno for good? Thos only logical corresponding move would be to let go Ronny, and some team would pick him up.

That's why I'd try to get him on a minor league deal. In September we could have both Lopez and Ronny on the bench.

Lopez is passable at SS. He'd be better than trying to use Fontenot or DeRosa at SS, but a good bit worse than Cedeno with the glove.

His bat hasn't been there for two years, and I'm unsure why. For a few years leading up to 2007, he was quite the hitter and he's only 28.

No, I'm not thinking Lou would play him every day. But as between Lopez and Cedeno as the backup SS, I see no reason to pick Lopez for the next 2 months.

There's the fact that Lopez is a SS in name only.

I've been a proponent of adding Lopez in the past when we were seriously talent-poor, but isn't he supposedly a bad guy?

I don't know that I'd want to add a malcontent to what appears to be a very professional and cohesive group.

If he'll take a minor league deal, I don't see what the harm is. Unless, of course, you're worried about 34-year old Luis Figueroa's playing time.

The way Lopez has been hitting, he's not an upgrade over anyone currently on the roster now. However, sending him to Iowa doesn't hurt to see if he can somehow return to being somewhat productive offensively.

I imagine that any minor league deal would come with a guarantee that he'd be added to the major league roster in September.

Why add a potential troublemaker to the roster down the stretch?

If he causes problems, you cut him loose. It's not like he's going to come in and shoot up the locker room.

I'd say buy low and see what happens. Give him a minor league deal and see how he hits in AAA.

I'd do the same

I assume neither of you, or anyone that's supporting checking out his performance in AAA, discounts the abilities of any of our players that tear up AAA but struggle in the majors. If he goes to AAA and puts up an .850 OPS, what does that prove?

He's a little different than an Andres Torres or Bobby Scales in that Lopez has had success at the major league level. Besides that, someone in the organization would be providing info on how he's putting up that .850 OPS. Is he making solid contact? Is he being selective? Is he primarily hitting mistakes or showing the ability to hit good pitches?
