You heard it here...if Griffey accepts the trade, expect Swisher to be traded back to Oakland for Huston Street.

And you heard it from Steve Stone.

Actually, no I didn't. I heard it before he went on this morning. Didn't know he mentioned it.

I'll qualify my statement by saying it depends what the Sox give up and if other deals hinge on this trade (ie.- PK or Swish being traded), but,

I think this move is similar to the Cubs getting Edmonds. It's a low risk, high reward. Griffey is not the player he was, he's old, prone to injury, the bat has slowed, he's not a great fielder and he hasn'r had a great year at the plate. But he could get hot for a stretch, he's a veteran and as far as a contract, he will cost the Sox very little (and nothing next year). It's not like he has to hit much to equal or better the production of Konerko or Swisher. The biggest liability is that he'll most likely have to play CF (assuming JT or PK aren't dealt) and I just don't know that he can do that on a regular basis.

I don't see this as horrible.

This is worse than the Edmonds deal because the White Sox have to give up something in return. Plus, the Cubs had Felix Pie that they were replacing. Now don't get me started on the "chance" that Felix got, but they were replacing a position that wasn't producing. Griffey plays the 3 positions where the White Sox 3 best hitters happen to play, unless you want to force him into CF. And while Edmonds is a pretty bad fielder in CF these days. He's worlds better than Griffey out ther. Griffey is a DH with a glove on.

They did project as similar hitters at the time of their acquisitions though.

That'd mess up the White Sox commercials.

So you heard it from someone other than Stone? Either way, we didn't hear it first from you, right?

But if they're giving up a nothing prospect, then it's not worse. I agree with his fielding. There's problems if he's pratrolling CF on a regular basis.

I think Konerko's on his way out.

I don't know. He still has $24 million left on his contract over the next 2 years. White Sox would have to pick up quite a bit of that to get him traded.

And the fans love the guy.

The Sox fans I know are more than ready for Konerko to go bye-bye.

The only way this deal makes sense is if Paulie is on the move. Move Swisher to first and then have Griffey play CF and Thome DH. Obviously the Sox won't trade Dye or Q, so they have to get rid of the 1B/DH log jam in order to make this deal even make a little sense. Thome would be too much of a butcher at first, but taking Swish out of center would really weaken their OF defense. Konerko seems like the perfect type of Dusty guy, but the Reds have the heir apparent in Votto at first. I can't imagine a last place team is interested in acquiring an aging 1B that isn't hitting. I just don't see how the White Sox are getting any better with this deal, because they are going to have a huge log jam.

Though with Kenny Williams there is often more than meets the eye, so I think if the deal goes through then I think the rest of the day will be really interesting, especially if the rumor that Beane is involved is true.

Edit: With the deal done I still think they need to move one of Thome, Konerko, or Swisher. Giving up Swisher as rumored makes little sense to me, so I still think Paulie should be the one to go, but it will be tough with 2yrs and 24 million left on his contract.

Anything more than a low level prospect was too much. I now think this was a not so great deal. The Soc had Massett projected in their future rotation a few weeks back. I guess with the addition of Clayton Richard, Massett became expendable.

I gotta believe KW makes another move.

Holy crap this is a stupid deal for the White Sox.

Even if they do spin Swisher back for Street (which I doubt), it's dumb. So basically they traded 2 semi-decent players for a old, bad, creaky guy who can't play CF or 1B, and who's blocked at RF and LF.

And if they trade Swisher for Street, that means that they gave up Swisher plus prospects they dealt in the first place to get Swisher for a reliever.

WTG Kenny.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Ken Griffey Jr. has accepted a trade to the White Sox.

According to CBSSports.com, the Reds will receive Danny Richar and Nick Masset while paying the remaining $4 million on Griffey's contract. Richar has seen his stock decline this year after playing 56 games with the White Sox last season, spending the entire year at Triple-A while hitting just .262/.321/.427. Masset has a 5.63 career ERA in 92 2/3 innings spent mostly as a reliever, but the Reds may view him as a potential fourth or fifth starter long term.

Have fun with that in CF...I'd get rid of Konerko if I was KW..What are they gonna do with the log jam of Swisher,Thome,Konerko,Griffey? Corners are set

Well if this Swisher-for-Street noise has any validity, then maybe the Cubs' angle here is to give the A's some more prospects and get Swisher for themselves.

I wonder if the Sox will have to pay his $4M buy out. Richar and Massett aren't really useful players, and Griffey is bad, but if the Sox have to pay that $4M buy out, then wow its a terrible terrible deal.

The Score speculation is that Dye could be moved to first base to make room for Griffey in RF. Konkero has to approve any deal, and the way he is playing, I don't see any team with interest. More likely, PK will go to the bench and share time with Thome as DH.
