Big hit from D-Lee. He seems ready to roll again.

Gaudin was more then huge in that 8th inning. A great addition to the pen in the Harden deal. Reed Johnson with maybe the play of the game in the 7th on that slide.

Marmol looks back to normal and Soriano gets it rolling to start.

Ok, ok, Lilly did a decent job as well.

Big win in game 1 of the 4 game set.

Seriously, great game for everyone.

Except Bob Howry. Unless just the one HR was better than the expectation.

Didn't take Sori long to start hitting off his DL stint did it.

Pretty nice to have a guy who heals fast and doesn't require a lot of rehab time when he does go down.

Hope it's like ESPN, "Stars came to play"

Lee and Sori

A-Ram is slumping now but his history indicates that he will have a hot month or 2 before its over.

He is up and down alot.

Lee seems to be getting hyped up, hopefully he can perform for a long stretch like he did a couple years ago.

Sori will K and will pop out a lot but those first at bat or early solo bombs mess up pitchers thinking sometimes.

zambrano harden dempster lilly is sick actually.

Great game. I was biting my nails the whole way through. Lee played a great game, but I almost threw something through my tv when he grounded into what should've been a rally killing double play. Fantastic job by Reed Johnson to get in to second hard. The ball was out before he got there, but he obviously altered that play and helped the Cubs score.

Lets get Z going tomorrow and get to Sheets early.

Great game for Howry in the sense that he only allowed the Brewers to tie the game rather than take the lead.

Bob Howry has a 12.60 ERA since the all-star break..How is this piece of trash still on the team? How is management that stupid to let him pitch in crucial situations and just still being on this team??

There is no reason to drop Howry. I would not pitch him in a tie game in the 8th or with a 1 run lead though. If he rights the ship he will be huge in October. If not so what, we are not going to replace his potential.

Calling him trash is uncalled for.

I didn't know 34 (almost 35) year old relievers had "potential."

Compared to how he is pitching now. It's the same as selling low with no replacement in sight. Should his role change, without question yes.

It's definately comparable to the last time Sori came off the DL back in May. Back in May it took him about 17 at bats---or 3 full games---to get going again, and coming off the DL now, it took him about 18 atbats. So yeah, Sori coming off DL in July is very similar to him coming off DL in May.

But that's just it, the Cubs have replacements waiting in the minors. Wuertz, Ascanio and Ceda would all do a better job for the rest of the year IMO. If nothing else, drop him when Wood gets back. His straight fastball is only hitting about 93 now and his slider been ineffective. The Cubs really can't allow him to blow games left and right every time he enters the game.

Wuertz and Ascanio have both been getting torched pretty good in Iowa. Ascanio has given up runs in 7 of his last 10 outings, and Wuertz in 2 of his last 3(including a 3 walk inning). You could add Ceda I guess, but he's given up 3 hits and a walk, 2 walks, and 3 hits respectively in his most recent AA outings. There's no clear replacement for Howry's job, unless Lieber is healthy.

And to defend Howry a bit, it was a terrible matchup for him. Branyan, much like Adam Dunn, either homers or K's and Howry simply doesn't really strike people out (at least right now).

I had a bad feeling from the time Branyan stepped in.

I liked seeing him on the Cub bench when he was on the DL.

As soon as Wood gets off the DL, there will be no reason whatsoever to pitch Howry later than the sixth - barring him entering in a blowout - and I don't think Lou will.

For now, Lou will sometimes not have a choice (due to prior bullpen usages) but to use Howry in the seventh, but that should change when Wood returns and he can move Marmol to the eighth and have Gaudin, Shark, Eyre, etc for the seventh.

Because thankfully, management isn't kneejerk or hyperbolic.
