Samardizja is starting to get the sinker working along with the strikeouts. The last 4 in play outs have been ground balls.

5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K's, 67 pitches, 4 GO-3 FO

Wheels completely falling off in the sixth.

Shark gives up a run in the 6th on 1 hit. He's given up 2 hits and 1 walk through 6. He's up to 9 k's on the day so far.

Look for him at a Wrigley Field near you in September.

Wow. How long has that been the buzz around Wrigley?

Do you get the sense that the Cubs view him as a starter in the future? Are they going to let that play out or is there some impatience due to the contract?

pitching well at AAA + already on the 40 man, doesn't seem surprising at all that he'd be up in Sept no matter who he is.

Would be nice to get him some starts for Harden, Z etc. if there's a bigish lead in the division.

Show of hands, how many of us expected Shark to be doing this well at this point in the season?

this would be the 4th straight game in which Samardz has had a career high in K's, counting ties.

This is a short stretch, of course. I wouldn't be at all shocked if next three starts he gives up 14 runs in 12 innings with 3 K's and 8 walks. But it sure is an encouragement, and supports the idea that the Cub scouts were not insane to imagine that this kind of stuff might be at least possible.

He's 23, in AAA, pretty young, time ahead of him, time for his control to improve. But it would seem something has changed a bit. Splitter has been mentioned, hiding the ball better has been mentioned, but something like that.

Given that a one-year Maddux costs about $10, I'd guess that perhaps Samardz doesn't look like such a bad $10 gamble after all.

Completely astonishing, I must say.

It's not completely unusual for a guy who's in only his second full season of really being dedicated to this sport to figure things out.

He was a thrower before. He also played college football at one of the most prestigious programs in the nation. He was split between both, now that he's dedicated to pitching he is starting to figure things out.

He's now struck out 40 in AAA compared to 44 in AA, while having less than half the innings he had at AA.

So maybe the story/myth was true that Shark was given direction on what pitches and pitches he couldnt use? Sure seems with the massive increase in ks is because of some out pitch that he is using now(the splitter?). I never understood that plan/story but i rememeber hearing it a year or 2 ago, or maybe i imagined it, and shrugged it off. Edited by cubweiser03

Plus he wasn't even a pitcher in HS.
