Think they trade Carasco or Cardenas for him? I'm sure they feel Cardenas is expendable with Utley around but that sure would be overpaying.

Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman and Matt Spencer are the haul for Beane. I know nothing of Philly's system. Anyone?

doesn't seem like a good ballpark for him to pitch in

It's not a good ballpark for anybody to pitch in. But yeah, low K rate and only a 1.3 g/f ratio is not good for that park.

That was my first reaction. Blanton in Citizens Bank is not a good match. Away from home this year he's giving up a home run every 6 innings, to go with a 1.50 WHIP, an ERA pushing 6, and a K/BB pushing 1. Brutal.

He's a ground ball pitcher, though not extremely so. It shouldn't hurt him too much, though he hasn't been very good in Oakland this year. Add in the pitcher batting, and he should be about the same, IMO.

BA had PHL ranked as the #22 overall system before the season began. Cardenas, Outman, & Spencer are PHL's #2, #4, & #28 overall prospects.

PHL's best prospect is pitcher Carlos Carrasco. Jason Donald & Lou Marson are also solid prospects, and it appears PHL was able to hold onto them.

They overpaid.

Cardenas is a borderline top 25 prospect in all of baseball (was #76 going into the season per BA; he missed the cut in their midseason top 25 prospects). He's got to be worth more than Blanton on his own. I like his bat, possibly a middle of the order hitter at second base.

Cardenas was #2 and Outman #4 in the BA top 10 for Philly last year.

Cardenas' stats.

Outman's stats.

Spencers' stats. Struggling at 22 in the FSL.

That's a lot to give up for a guy who profiles like Adam Eaton.

I don't see this deal ending well for the Phillies, but I suppose anyone is better than Adam Eaton. The move to the NL might help him, but I don't think he'll have the same effect Harden will have on the Cubs or Sabathia will have on the Brewers. Seems to me like they're making a move just for the sake of making a move, and you almost always get burned on deals like that.

Yeah seriously....did we give up more or less for Harden? It's even better because the only player we gave up that really hurts us now and really in the future is Gallagher.

philly scares me more than last year

Not me. 1-25, the Cubs are better then Philly. And getting Blanton is, IMO, no more then a lateral move for Philly. But it does put Brett Myers back in the bullpen. A Myers/Lidge back end of the pen is as nasty as Marmol/Wood. But the Phills is still a one starting pitcher rotation.

Why is Outman in the pen? He seems to be a good enough prospect to start games. Needs more innings to develop a 3rd pitch (changeup?). Cardenas is a great prospect. Exactly what the As need. Solid all around player. Patient at the plate, doesn't strike out a bunch. Has good doubles power that will allow him to develop into a 20 HR hitter as he matures. He reminds me a little of a LH Ian Kinsler.

The Phillies win in spite of being stupid.

I remember when they gave up like the 17th overall pick for Jon Lieber. Then they couldn't get anything better for Abreu and Lidle than the guy the Yankees drafted with that pick. Than the Freddy Garcia fiasco. Now this.

Blanton is simply not that good. He's not even an innings eater away from Oakland.

Dumb.

Outman actually went to the same college I did (He was the class before me). He's a great kid, and I texted him to see how he felt about the situation and he seemed pretty opened minded. He's one heck of an athlete. Actually hit .379 his senior season at the plate, and won various awards on the mound leading the mules to the D2 world series. I wish nothing but the best of luck to him.
