Samardzija faces Albuquerque for the 3rd time in 5 starts, the 2nd time in Albuquerque.

At least I have something to follow today I suppose.

Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Jeff Samardzija (Iowa & Tenn: 6-6, 4.53 ERA, 101.1 IP, 66 K/53 BB)

Daytona: RHP Marcos Mateo (Daytona & Peoria: 2-2, 3.53 ERA, 66.1 IP, 57 K/26 BB)

Peoria: RHP Kevin Kreier (4-2, 3.30 ERA, 43.2 IP, 39 K/12 BB)

Boise: RHP Josh Whitlock (0-1, 5.94 ERA, 16.2 IP, 20 K/9 BB)

Mesa: RHP Chris Carpenter (0-0, 18.00 ERA, 1 IP, 1 K/1 BB) & LHP Jeffry Antigua (1-2, 4.09 ERA, 11 IP, 9 K/5 BB) & RHP Julio Pena (2-0, 0.54 ERA, 16.2 IP, 8 K/4 BB)

As always, the Mesa starters are best guesses which are made all the more difficult with their rain out last Friday. We should be seeing Cashner and Shafer soon...Shafer sooner than Cashner, I believe.

24th rounder David Cales (St. Xavier, IL) will get the start for Mesa. This is his pro debut.

The Eau Claire Leader Telegram[/url]"]Cales' professional fate is as a pitcher. A right-hander with a three-quarters delivery, he touches the low 90s with his fastball and has an electric slider. He's unscored upon in 11 innings this summer, has issued only one walk and has struck out 16. Opponents are batting just .147 against him.

Apparently Joe Simokaitis was traded to the Mariners last Friday.

And Cales was roughed up: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HR. Jeffry Antigua came in and allowed an inherited runner to score and gave up one of his own.

And Samardzija doubles and scores a run in the top of the 2nd.

Samardzija works around a couple walks to have a scoreless 2nd inning.

2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 GO-1 FO, 34 pitches (21 strikes)

And the strikeout rate and home run rate continue to go up after Jeff gets 2 K's and gives up a 2 run home run in the 3rd inning.

He is getting a lot of swing and misses though facing a very good lineup.

Argh, Samardzija gives up another HR (although, it IS in Alburquerque)...a 2-run shot following a single. He did rack up 2 more Ks.

3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 2 GO-2 FO, 49 pitches (32 strikes)

In the 4th, he gets 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

4 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, 1 HR, 2 GO-3 FO, 71 pitches (42 strikes).

That's as many Ks as he had last time in 7 innings.

Jeff worked around a couple two out singles for a scoreless 6th inning. Got to think his day is over.

6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 9 K, 1 HR, 4 GO-5 FO, 102 pitches (61 strikes).

That's a career high in strikeouts.
