Found this little nugget tonight.

: Teams that have checked in with Atlanta about the availability of Mark Teixeira have been told the Braves aren't hanging any "For Sale" signs until at least the end of next week. If they can hang close in the East through the first series after the All-Star break, then Teixeira stays and they're likely to resume their efforts to add a bat (with Xavier Nady now clearly at the top of their wish list). But if the Braves slide any further, they'll almost certainly conclude they're too banged up to make a run, and the Teixeira auction will begin. The Braves would be likely to start that bidding by asking for a young first baseman who could replace him.

The sad part is Teixeira is a guy they'd love to keep, and Teixeira never acts like a player who wants to leave. But Scott Boras has already sent signals that the free-agent asking price on Teixeira this winter will start at $23 million a year (theoretically for eight to 10 years). So the Braves know the one thing certain about Teixeira's trip through free agency is that it won't end with a return to Atlanta. Which will only make them more prone to hit the "ejector" button in this month if they think they can't win.

Holy Crap!

Might want to fix the typo in the title. I'm assuming you meant to say "seek" but I initially read it as "Tex may seal 10 yr deal".

But yeah, that's ridiculous and he'll never ever get that. I know we say that a lot when guys ask for crazy money, only to get it 2 months later, but 230 for Mark Teixeira? Give me a break.

The only team that might come close to that is Baltimore. And that is only because Angelos is so desparate for star power, that he'll overpay a local to come back to Baltimore to play. I expect any team to go over 5 yrs and 17 mill per, if that.

I think he will get 5/90 maybe 6/108. If it goes higher than that, I hope the Yankees stay out of it! I would think the 6th year would be as an option, but you are right in regards to Baltimore.

Come you guys. He's worth it. Teixeira's putting up an .857 OPS this year! It's impossible to find an .857 OPS 1st baseman!

That's a bad year for him too. I don't know why everyone is shocked by Boras's initial expectations, he always starts unrealistically. Wasn't he asking 10/200 mil for Aaron freaking Rowand awhile ago? He'll probably get a contract somewhere in the neighborhood of what we gave Z. If he played a position of need for us, he'd be worth it too.

Didn't Teixiera play a little OF in his career? Don't know the Cubs have the payroll to do it, but if Kosuke ever agreed to play CF, could Tex play RF. Or DeRosa in RF, Tex in LF and Fonzie at 2B.

I'd love the Cubs to get a lefthanded power/AVG bat in the lineup regularly.

Fonzie can't play 2B. In his prime he would have made today's Jeff Kent look adequate at 2B. He was simply horrendous, a complete and total butcher at 2B. That's why Washington forced him to move, while knowing that he would be pissed and leave in the offseason anyways.

Just like Beltran was seeking 10 / $200 million? He "only" wound up with 7 / $119 million.

I could see Texiera getting something like 6 / 120 or 7 / 140, but I don't see anything beyond that.

Tex is very, very good, but he's not quite on the same plane as the other few $20 mil hitters out there (ARod, Manny). He's maybe a $17-$18 mil per year hitter in my estimation. I think a 6/108 is about the best he's looking at. If he could play 3B or something else harder than 1B while hitting what he is hitting, then he'd probably be a $20+ guy.

I don't see why he can't get at least the same contract Soriano got.

He's had better years, but if you adjust for park it's right around his career rates.

He's a very good player considering his defense, but he's not elite. Soriano/Beltran money sounds about right.

Does Boras represent Josh Hamilton? That will be scary someday.

Won't Hamilton be something like 32 when he first hits free agency? I don't know, I don't have the numbers in front of me. But I'll be interested to see what happens with Ryan Howard. He's got a lot of upsides, a ton of downsides, and he'll be sort of old when he hits free agency.

I think the overall economy needs to be taken into consideration here. '03 & '04 were down years as far as contracts doled out, and this recession looks to be much, much, more serious. Yeah, attendance isn't down (yet), but concessions and peripheral spending certainly are.

IMO, the days of these absurd contracts are over for awhile. Unless the Yanks are involved, it's hard to see this guy getting more $13/14 million per.

No surprise it's Boras floating this ridiculous number. It's always him.

Tex isn't getting that much money. Floating a ridiculous contract number is part of Boras' formula though.

if it's 10 years, $23 million total, you're getting a hell of a steal.

That's what I thought when I saw the thread title. Tex needs to aim higher.

That is insane! He plays the easiest position in baseball and he's not even playing well this year!

Boras and Hamilton is an odd pairing

Hamilton isn't even allowed by Narron to carry over 20 bucks in his wallet
