Tim Kurkijan came out and said "Erik Bedard isn't the type to succeed on contending teams, or if he is, he can't be "the man." The best quote was him saying he was happier on non-contending teams.

Ouch. Can't wait to see who pays out the ass for this guy when he's a free agent!

I know there were rumors of the Cubs being interested, even going back to when he's a Oriole, but if the team has interests in Erik, they need to back out now. I believe Brenly once said, managers loves pitchers who fight them over the ball. Managers loves pitchers who don't want to come out of the game (I believe he made a comment like this, in Z's first start off the DL, when he pull Z, and on camera, you can see Z fighting to stay in the game). And Bedard is the kind of pitcher, who won't fight the manager. So, if the Cubs do indeed continue to shop for another starter, I would stay away from Bedard.

Marquis is that type of guy and everyone hates him. Funny how Marquis cant accept the fact he sucks after all these years and being left off playoff rosters. It's like Ok buddy give it up already, your not good . He is just seriously ,a stubborn, oblivious douchebag. Lou knows that for sure and I can't wait till he's off this team.

I don't really understand this line of thinking. He's a really good pitcher that has been stuck on horrible teams his entire career that is 1.5 years from a big pay day. If you go 6 good innings, why risk the 7th? If you're around 100 pitches, why go more? Keep that ERA as low as possible, the team isn't going anywhere anyways. I think he is actually the kind of guy that would thrive in a winning situation. Post season notoriety can bring in big bucks.

Gordon Wittenmeyer begs to differ.

I don't care if managers like guys they have to fight for the ball. Prior and Wood said they could stay in games and Dusty let them and that didn't work out too well. I have no problem with a pitcher who knows his limits. If you can only give me 5-6 strong, fine. I read something from a scout saying Bedard (or maybe it was Harden) isn't the type of guy who can finish a game for you. To that I say, so what? The only people that finish games are Roy Halladay and closers. 6 innings is pretty standard. 6+ is well above average.

Give me what you got for however long you have it, then get out of the game. I don't need you being a hero and coming out to get another guy in the 7th, then surrendering a couple runs.

This is exactly correct. It doesn't make much romance for the sports writers but it is exactly correct.

I heard this last night and laughed. It's idiotic in a sense.

It's not idiotic. It maybe dated, but it's not idiotic.

I want players that are so competitive and care so much about winning that they always want the ball, that they'll fight to stay in the game.

That said, I also want a manager that's smart enough to make the right moves when they need to be made, regardless of the players wanting to stay in the game.

No it's not. The manager first of all doesn't have to keep him in the game but showing a little mental toughness helps a pitcher when he is struggling. I don't want him out there if he is gassed or feeling sore but this isn't always a "hey I pitched my 6 I've done my job" type of thing. It's also when he's getting hit in the 2nd and you need him out there to help save your bullpen a couple more innings of work. It's fine for guys to be laid back but it's also a team game and sometimes you have to take some lumps in order to help your teammates.

That's nonsense. Saturday Randy Johnson, arguably one of the best pitchers all time, went out to the mound after batting and during warm ups decided he'd done enough and walked off the mound.

I want a guy who can tell when he's finished. We get in lots of trouble when our guys walk a dude and give up a hit as they run out of gas in the 7th or whatever.

Bedard actually sounds like a dude I would like. I could care less about this ridiculous "will to win" garbage. Even if he doesn't care, winning ballgames is winning ballgames.

Then why the hell are we wasting millions of dollars on a manager? I want a competent manager who can make that call. If you start allowing every pitcher make that call, I don't think you realize the can of worms that would be getting opened up.

The other thing with Bedard, from what I've read, it doesn't seem like he tries to take himself out of the game when he feels like he's done. He does it when he hits what he thinks his pitch count limit should be. I think almost everyone here understands that any given pitcher has a little more in the tank on some days, and a little less. Bedard should be able to go over 100 from time to time, and is better off being yanked before hitting 100 other times. If he's allowed to take himself out at 100, that also means he may be sticking in there longer than he should be on occasion to keep his average up to 100.

Randy Johnson has been pitching the bigs for around 20 years, and knows this game, and his body, well. He's also over 40, he's not in his 20s. An isolated incident of RJ taking himself out of the game on shouldn't be equated to Bedard setting a pitch count limit on himself every game.

What, he should retire because he's above league average for a 5 starter.. Is that what your saying?

I have no interest in running you're softball team. I have more pressing needs then that....like sleep.

marquis is good for what he does...a fifth starter. he wants the ball but you would really like a free agent with talent that wants the ball...more like z if you are looking to acquire a pitcher. we certainly have enough end of the rotation options
