There are some fun reactions on the message boards out there... I've been reading Athletics Nation, Brewerfan, WSI, Gateway Redbirds, and a touch of Orioles Hangout (just because all they ever did this winter was talk about how crappy the Cubs minor leaguers are)

There was no way Rotoworld could bring themselves to admit Hendry got the better of Beane.

He really seems to. Yeah, Gallagher has a bright future, but Murton never had a chance on the Cubs, and Patterson is 25 and didnt earn many brownie points in his last few games on the big league club. I dont know much about Donaldson, but with Soto, and Castillo behind him, I dont know what his future looked like.

I would have been happy with what we gave up just for Harden, but to get Gauden .. who is just 25 years old, has several years on a dirt cheap and has electric stuff when he can find the strike zone ... we may have upgraded two pitching spots in the rotation, and if healthy Harden might immediately become a top 5 pitcher in the NL with Z, Johan, Webb and CC. For a handfull of midlevel prospects?

In the infamous words of The Wire's Senator Clay Davis ...Shheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Not to be a buzz-kill, but food for thought (Harden's 2008 splits):

very good job by Hendry. even if Harden continues to have injury problems, the Cubs didn't give up any future stars (IMO). it's a great gamble. very happy about this.

unfortunately, my expectations just shot up a bit so the let down will be that much more difficult in the end.

I think I'll be okay if he posts a 3.38 ERA for the Cubs

You're right. Plus he's moving to the NL. Look what that did for Ted Lilly, who has about 1/2 of Harden's ability.

That's really caused by a single start. In his first game back from injury, he gave up 5 earned over 3.2 IP at Texas.

He's been quite good since then:

10 starts, 62.1 IP, 42 H, 20 BB, 72 K, 4 HR, 2.02 ERA, .190/.258/.272 against

Another excellent point. What a great trade this is.

I'm shocked none of who we thought were our best trading chips were in this deal. No Rich Hill, Ronny Cedeno, Sean Marshall, or Felix Pie. Donaldson is too low in the system to know much about, and he has Soto blocking him for a good 4-7 years anyway. Murton has no position on this team. I think EPatt will be a decent hitter, but he wasn't going to be much of a factor this season, and his defense has been pretty bad. I liked Gallagher, but not enough to miss a chance to upgrade this team for the playoffs. Really, none of these guys projects to be a superstar and Oakland sent us back another young pitcher as well, so this has to be considered a good trade.

Moreover, if Hill can go back to being something like 2007 Rich Hill and Harden can stay healthy, the rotation could be not just good this year, but lethal over the next few years.

Anyone else feel high right now? I haven't smoked anything I swear. It's like I have a buzz in my head, and I can't wait to watch him start on Friday. Happy Happy Joy Joy.

Gallagher may well be a future star. I dont know about the others, but I can tell you whatever happens, Matt Murton is dancing all the way to Oakland.

I still can't believe that Hendry pulled off this deal. Can someone give a scouting report on Gaudin? Never heard of him before.

Here for another redundant post. I'm thrilled, this is a very good trade. Harden obviously has injury concerns but is an elite pitcher. Gaudin is an underrated part of the deal (though I doubt he supplants Marquis in the rotation). The A's got some cheap young players that can help them out, but none are high ceiling types. I especially like Gallagher.

Olney talked about how this literally came together in a day, evidently not thinking anyone outside of Chicago would be able to hear Hendry say this was worked on for a month and got serious in the last 10 days.

He also talked about how this is a risky move for the Cubs. He's got serious egg on his face right now, at any rate.
