Is there a spot on the 25-man open now? Who gets called up?

And could we see Gaudin in the #5 spot? I would take him over Marquis.

Did Hendry say anything about what Gaudin's role will be? I'm very happy to have him.

Shop Marquis around and take whatever you can get for him, even if its the proverbial "garbage for garbage" trade. Maybe we'll get lucky and whoever we'd get back would be as helpful as Karros and Grudz were in 2003.

Best day of my cub's life since the nomar trade! I might need to drink a celebratory beer!

PS does Jim Hendry look a lot healthier to anyone else?

Is this Harden's last year for his current contract?

No. He has either a vesting or a club option for next year for only $7 million. If it doesn't vest, it can be picked up by the Cubs, who IMO would be morons not to take that chance.

Someone said earlier that he's also arby eligible or something so he'll be under the Cubs control regardless.

I love reding a Oakland A's message board and they are rather calm. I was expecting a bit of outrage at the deal. But, then again they do have faith in Beane as a talent evaluator. Many don't like the trade, but they seem willing to wait it out and see.

They weren't too concerned because of his injury history. He has been just as hurt as Sheets.

which, in hindsight, really shouldn't have been a good day at all

Well, we did get Murton in that trade.

When we got Garciaparra I ordered his jersey that night. I won't be doing that with Harden.

What to do with Marshall? Get rid of Marquis and have Marshall as the number 5 guy?

Harden injury insurance in Iowa. Let Hill's return bump Marquis from the rotation.

As of now, Marshall is better than Hill.

Wow, I checked ESPN about 30 minutes ago and saw a little note "Cubs land A's pitcher Harden"! I made a post on another forum about what Oakland fans could expect of Gallagher, E-Patt, and Murton, and asked in return about Harden and Gaudin, and got this response:

Harden is a top 5 pitcher in all of baseball when he's healthy. Arguably the best stuff in the entire league. His splitter is [expletive] nasty.

Gaudin has a nice slider, is a 5th starter on a good team as long as he can keep up with what's he has done this year and last. I wouldn't be surprised to see him move back into the bullpen again though.

Gaudin seems like Marquis-ish, but at least he's only 25 and won't have a huge salary.

Was there any mention of Hendry pursuing other deals? We sure have plenty of chips left

Hendry said that even if he had gotten 6 players today he'd still be open to other deals.

Gaudin's numbers. I wouldn't be opposed to putting his 2008 numbers in the #5 spot. Transition from the AL to the NL should help.

The Cubs wasted little time in countering their National League Central rival Brewers‘ move of trading for C.C. Sabathia as they acquired right-hander Rich Harden from the Athletics along with right-hander Chad Gaudin in a trade for right-hander Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton, Class AAA Iowa second baseman/outfielder Eric Patterson and low Class A Peoria catcher Josh Donaldson.

The Cubs made the trade Tuesday night, barely 24 hours after the Brewers acquired Sabathia, the reigning American League Cy Young winner, from the Indians. The Cubs now have a 1-2 punch at the top of their rotation in Carlos Zambrano and Harden to rival the Brewers’ duo of Ben Sheets and Sabathia.

Entering play Tuesday, the Cubs held a 3 1/2-game lead over the Cardinals and a four-game edge over the Brewers in the division.

Harden, 27, is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts this season with 10.75 strikeouts and 3.62 walks per nine innings, a 1.14 WHIP and 3.2 SNLVAR.

Gaudin, 25, is 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA in 26 games, six starts, with 6.32 strikeouts and 2.44 walks per nine innings, a 1.28 WHIP, 0.5 SNLVAR and 0.361 WXRL.

Gallagher, 22, is 3-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 12 games, 10 starts, with 7.52 strikeouts and 3.38 walks per nine innings, a 1.36 WHIP and 0.5 SNLVAR. In five starts at Iowa to start the season, he was 2-2 with a 3.10 ERA and 3.15 eqivalent PERA.

Murton, 26, is hitting .250/.286/.300 with no home runs and a .198 EqA in 19 games. At Iowa this season, he batted .298/.397/.382 with one homer and a translated .243 EqA in 54 games.

Patterson, 25, was hitting .320/.358/.517 with six home runs and a translated .269 EqA in 52 games at Iowa. In a stint with the Cubs this season, he batted .237/.318/.342 with one homer and a .238 EqA in 13 games.

Donaldson, 22, hit .217/.276/.349 with six homers and a translated .156 EqA in 63 games at Peoria.

pretty basic info; probably more analysis tomorrow.

You gotta love the fact that Chicago lost all of its top upper level prospects though.

Uhhh... wha??

All this chit chat is well and good but everyone is missing the big picture here!!

The Cubs rotation is

40% CANUCK

May as well embroider a maple leaf right in the middle of the "C"!!!

I absolutely love this trade!!

 \:D/

Harden is one of my favorite players, and I'm ecstatic that he's now a Cub. I can't believe we snagged Gaudin, too!! I'd much rather have him around than Marquis!!

Haha definitely didn't consider that. Let's go after Bedard now.

When did Vitters, Ceda, Rhee, Veal, or Pie get included in this deal?

Outstanding. For all of the knocks (and rightfully so at times) Hendry gets, we know he gets a deal done when the team is in contention and it almost always puts us in a better position to win without hurting us long-term. He and Beane really seem to work well together.

As has been said it's a good deal for both teams. I would have thought Oakland could have maybe gotten more in return, but they do have 3 pieces that are Major League ready. Gallagher is the only one that may really hurt, but that's what you have to give to get such a high reward possibly.

I got a Nomar t-shirt jersey his second home game with the Cubs. Bad investment. Hopefully Harden works much, much better.

Holy jesus, he pulled it off! After listening to my I Pod all the way home from work, and having dinner, I just turn on CSN and hear about Sean Gallagher packing his bags for Oakland, and knew it only meant one thing! Kudos Jim, Kudos. Now you can stick your face bag in that bucket of chicken with pride!

So soes this mean Hoff comes back in Murtons place?
